Water rights secured for refinery project near Lovington

The Denton pool gasoline plant gains assured water by transferring a well from R. F. Heidel. Owners previously blocked by water negotiations purchased 160 acres from Heidel, three miles north of the original site, for development by several oil firms and Atlantic Refining Co.

Water Hearing Set In Lovingly On Tuesday

A representative of the State's office will be in Lovingly on Tuesday to hear a protest by Wraldo Duncan against three well permits applied for by T. H. Tutt of Tatum. It was not known whether John Bliss or an assistant would be present to hear the protest.

Final Rites Held In Lovington For Mrs. Coleman

Mrs. Cordie Higgins Coleman wife of Lea County rancher Lewis Coleman died in Lea County Hospital at 8 30 Friday night after being stricken at 4 P M on Friday. Funeral services were held in Lovington Sunday at 2 30 at the Smith Yarbro chapel with burial in Lovington Cemetery. Survivors include husband Lewis Coleman two daughters Mrs Roy Kirk and Mildred Lewis both of Hobbs one son Lewis E Coleman of Hobbs and two sisters Mrs Floyd Wilhoit of Roseburg Oregon and Mrs John Long of Roswell.

Accident Near Here Sends One To Hospital

The sheriff reports an weekend car crash two miles northeast of Lovington on road 18. Mrs. Bobbie Jean Huckabay of Lubbock, 27, over turned at 4 30 PM Sunday. She is listed in serious condition at Lea County hospital. Her husband Roy Lee Huckabay and two others in the car, Michel Brayer and Lucien Lescaud of Paris, were unhurt.

Softball Entries Grow to Seven for Local League

Seven teams have entered the local softball league as managers and sponsors met Friday night. Teams listed include Mayes Bevans Drilling Co Parker Drilling Co Buckeye Gulf Nowell Drug Magnolia Petty and McCallister Fuel Co. Play begins around May 25 and another meeting is set for May 30.

Four Hobbsans Set for District Court Arraignments

Four Hobbsans Jimmy Glen Gilmore Ben Franklin Howell B F Bostick and Frank Kilpatrick appear in District Court today for arraignment on gambling charges. They were arrested at a chicken fight three miles south of Hobbs by state Policeman Jake Ramsey and three other patrolmen.

Jury Term Set as June Start in Roswell District Court

District Attorney Patrick F. Hannagan and assistant Joe Walton discussed the June jury term after May term opens. Two murder cases will be tried, including a carryover from a hung jury for Carl Brooks of Hobbs. About twenty drunk driving cases await docketing as filings rise. Jury and civil dockets set for May 12 with court opening May 11 and jury drawn May 12.

Graveside Rites Held Here For Hodge Infant

Graveside rites were held for the infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Drexell Hodge of Levington. The baby, who died shortly after birth, was buried in Levinton cemetery on Saturday afternoon.

Lovington BPW Wins Scrapbook Prize At State Meet

Lovington business and professional women won first place for best scrapbook in all five divisions at the State BPW Convention in Roswell. Sue Lawkis led the compilation with Mary Payne and Genevieve Arnold, while Carlsbad placed second and Jal earned honorable mention.

Lea County Youths Inducted Into Army

Thirteen Lea County youths left Lovington by chartered bus for induction into the armed forces on Wednesday, April 22. One volunteer, Fox Gerald McDonald of Lovington, joined the group. Names include Jack Duane Roberts, Lawrenza Bennett, Tommy Russeil Ross, James William Hendrick, Bobbie Thomason, Billy Walker, Hobbs, Boyce Don Vaughn, Billy Marvin Moore, Gerald Joseph Randolph, Kenneth Walden, Darrell Hall, Eunice, and Clinton Houston of Gladiola. Walden served as group leader.

Funeral services for Mrs. O. G. Cheek Sr.

Mrs. O G Cheek Sr age 65 died April 23 in Lea County Hospital after a brief illness. Born February 5, 1888 in Anston, Illinois she lived in Lovington since 1928. Survived by husband J J Cheek, two sons, six daughters, fourteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral held at Smith Yarbro chapel with Hugh Harris officiating and burial in Lovington Cemetery.

Co-on Officers Nominated for Re-election

The Lea County Electric Co-operative nominates officers for June election. A nominating committee listed members and named Kyle Taylor as president and Hubert Gill as vice president among others. A Hobbs Country Club tax ruling follows, with state action to place the club on Lea County's tax rolls and recover back taxes for 1948 to 1952.

Caprock Youth Assigned to ROTC Summer Camp

Norval Glenn of Caprock is among 33 New Mexico A and M College ROTC cadets chosen for a practical training summer camp at Ft. Benning Georgia from June 20 to July 31. He is a junior history and social science student, editor of the Round-up, and a member of Alpha Phi Gamma and Phi Mu Tau.

Farm Bureau Urges Nationals Applications From Farmers

The Farm and Livestock Bureau directors will hold a regular meeting on May 5. Secretary R. K. Harlan urged farmers needing Mexican nationals to submit their requests so they can be included on the next incoming load and advised copies of the application be made at the regional Denver office.
