Polio is gaining ground in New Mexico with 11 reported cases to date, surpassing the single case counted by mid April last year. The most recent case is located in San Juan County.
State police raided six night spots in Truth or Consequences New Mexico arresting 15 people. Roulette dice and poker tables were seized and destroyed. The city once called Hot Springs has hosted gambling as recreation for tourists.
Death of Johnny Jones a 70 year old Holbrook rancher is announced. He came to Lea County from Munday Texas and married Ella Hobbs. Six children survive. The Smith Yarbro ambulance will meet the train in Clovis Thursday to bring the remains to Lovington. Remains lie in state Thursday night through Friday. funeral services pending arrival of family.
Mayor Lake Frazier of Roswell arrives in Albuquerque to establish a state campaign headquarters likely at the Hilton Hotel. Campaign manager Luther Sharpe of Artesia, who recently withdrew from the congressional race, leads the effort.
District Judge T Har ris grants change of venue for Polo Arias, a former Bernalillo County deputy, now tried in Las Lunas Valencia County for the November 19 shooting of Abel Saavedra along an Albuquerque street.
Allan Clark, a leading New Mexico sculptor and cultural figure since 1929, died after a vehicle crash 17 miles north of Delta Colorado. Police say his pickup left the road and overturned. autopsy to determine cause. He was 53 and had won several awards including the 1950 Rosenwald Memorial Prize.
The defense argues John Maragon did not lie to Senators investigating five percenters and attributes his testimony to mis understanding. Attorney Irving Goldstein claims Maragon’s troubles stemmed from efforts to protect friends while testifying. The former White House frequenter is accused of lying about income and held jobs.

Clyde Browning was seriously injured Thursday night when his pickup veered into a bar-ditch to avoid a head on collision with a semi truck. The crash occurred on the highway between Artesia and Hagerman.
M. S. Dick Dickinson announced his candidacy for lieutenant governor of New Mexico. Born in Texas, he moved to New Mexico in 1931 and lives in Clovis where he is general manager of the Clovis Coca Cola Bottling Company. Judge Henry G. Coors and his wife visited Lovington on Monday promoting his Democratic bid for the Supreme Court nomination. Coors, born in Las Vegas, began practicing law in 1907 and once served as District Judge Division 1 in the second judicial district. Former Democratic congressman Roger Slaughter of Missouri is acquitted of illegal lobbying after waiving a jury trial. Federal Judge Holtzoff read the case and found he did not violate lobbying laws by representing grain interests.
A New Mexico Trudeau Society has formed to advance medical science in the state. Twenty four doctors signed as charter members in Albuquerque. Dr Carl Mulky was elected president to lead a four way plan for cooperation among doctors in developing scientific programs in New Mexico.
Buckingham Palace announces that Princess Elizabeth is expecting her second child this summer. The heir presumptive to the throne will not attend further public engagements. Her first child, Prince Charles, was born November 14, 1948, and Elizabeth is currently in Malta with Prince Philip.
Mr and Mrs Finis Heidel returned Monday from a trip to Albuquerque with no further details provided about their travels.
The 1950 Lea County Fair will be held in Lovington starting April 15 with events and attractions announced for the community. Local officials urge residents to attend and support the fair.
Jal Mayor L A Beard was reelected unopposed as city voters chose ward representatives for the first time. Write in votes totaled three for Bill Dublin Homer Pender and J T Recer, while M C Whitworth won 216 to 58 over Fred Cooper and George Blocker carried ward two 192 to 83 over L G Morris. Homer G Sapp won 167 to 106 over Bonner Ivey. Police Judge results: Clyde Leavell 240, C A Boyd 3, Gohaggoins 2. This was the first Jal city election with ward voting.
In Roswell New Mexico a 25 year old ex Air Force sergeant Leon C Potter who lost his memory and believed he was back in the Air Force rode a bus to Roswell after injuring in Chicago He ended up at Walker Air Force Base and was flown home to Gulfport Mississippi where his father Reverend E H Potter met him and brought him back home
The Agriculture Department predicts water shortages for Arizona New Mexico and parts of Nevada and California this spring due to depleted snowpack and low reservoir levels. Some Northwest areas may have adequate water while Colorado and Wyoming face pinch pressures. Idaho Montana Oregon Utah and Washington show favorable to good prospects.
Supreme Justice James B. McGhee, former 5th District Judge for Lea Eddy and Chaves counties, visited Loving ton Hobbs the first week. He stayed at the home of Mr and Mrs John Brand of Hobbs.
Tuesday April 18 marked the 20th anniversary of the railroad reaching Hobbs and Lovington. A large barbecue and speeches drew thousands, with former Governor Dillon riding into Lovington as engineer in overalls and cap, wrapping up the celebration in style.

STATE COLLEGE N M April 18 The Veterans Administration has announced rules for the veterans education program after July 25 1951 Published in the Federal Register the regulation says veterans not enrolled in spring 1950-51 or the 1951 summer session before July 25 lose further GI Bill benefits. Dropping out after July 25 1951 also forfeits benefits unless reasons beyond the veteran s control apply. Changes to courses outside listed seasons risk loss of benefits. exceptions include normal summer interruptions and other reasons beyond the veteran s control. The Association of Land-Grant Colleges and Universities says modifications are unlikely without Congressional directive.

William H. Carpenter and his nine year old son from Hobbs won second place in the Junior Yearling Class at the 23rd Panhandle Plains Dairy Show. Their two year old Jersey cow Volunteer Design Kathleen produced 54.9 pounds of milk in 24 hours with 5.55 percent butterfat, yielding 3,050 pounds of butter fat and earning a production contest trophy and banner at Universal Mills.
