United Press reports Peoria officials rejected breaking up a friendship formed in jail. Anna May Baldwin befriended two male inmates, aided their escape plan by buying hack saw blades, and later helped lower blades to their cell before being jailed again.
President Eisenhower and Agriculture Secretary Bensof discuss plans to veto the farm bill over rigid high supports for basic crops. A nationwide address is planned next Thursday night. party politics and potential special session are debated amid Republican and Democratic positions.
Farmers must file income tax returns and social security reports. Self employed farm operators must include Schedule F and pay social security tax at three percent on net income from four hundred to four thousand two hundred dollars. Many will file to comply even if no income tax is due. Free 1955 Farmer's Income Tax Guide available at the County Agent's office.
Plans are complete for Work Day of the Lovington Squadron Civil Air Patrol to be held next Saturday. The squadron will volunteer odd jobs to raise funds for equipment and unit functions. The group asks for cooperation in hiring the young men and women, noting their high average attendance.
The Lea County Traffic Safety Commission invites the public to a Monday 7:30 p m meeting in the Llano Elementary School Cafeteria Levington. Assistant District Attorney Kermit Nash will discuss The Legal Aspects of Traffic Safety. A truck bypass route around Lovington will be considered along with coffee and donuts provided by Lovington Municipal Schools bus drivers.
Tatum police had an Oldsmobile towed and stored when the owner could not be located. The car was later found turned over near Tatum.
Texas publisher Ralph Dry and Vernon Roland died in flames when their small plane crashed near Hobbs. Authorities traced the wreck to alcohol after each had recently been drinking at Paul’s Bar. A coroner’s inquest ruled the deaths were due to aircraft accident injuries. Civil Aeronautics Administration will investigate.
Gov John Simms will headline an inter-city Rotary gathering at 7 p m on April 25 at the Youth Center. Invitations go to surrounding clubs and Rotarians will bring their Rotary Annes. The local session Wednesday at Fellowship Hall of the Methodist Church featured vocational talk by Johnnie Connell. Visiting Rotarians included John Knorr Roswell and A G Gilette Troy NY and Robert J Cody Albuquerque with Jim Whittenberg.
Manfred McCracken owner of Llano Supermarket buys the Market Building from Mr and Mrs Clay Lawton and plans a three to four week remodel to add the store building formerly Lawton’s Supply. The enlarged facility will total 12 000 feet of floor space.
Lovington aims to form a Municipal Financial Study Group by inviting volunteers to advise the City Commission. Mayor Jerry Wright announced early volunteers and said the first conference with the advisory unit could occur in May. Citizens from various classes may join to discuss city finances beyond the occupation tax issue.
The State Income Tax Bureau reversed itself and set a new filing deadline of Monday April 16, aligning with the federal deadline after April 15 fell on a Sunday. State Tax Division Head J. Leon Miller said the change was made due to many taxpayers requesting return forms.
Service Pipeline conducted a safety meeting in the Sea Room of Llano Hotel on Wednesday night. H P Bradley of Tulsa spoke on safety. 34 employees attended and were served a steak dinner. J C Dotson led ceremonies. C E Wilson of Lubbock attended with other visitors. The program emphasized car seat safety belts for company vehicles. Frank T Sifferman received a 29 year service award from J J McNally.
Ronald Eugene Haynes has entered the U S Navy and begun recruit training. Joe Don Stevens, Jal, and Luis Edward Bayes have been discharged from service. Bayes, who served two years and four months overseas, resides in Oil Center.
Carlos Foster was elected president of the Jaycees at a Thursday night meeting, rising from vice-president. Elmer White serves as retiring president. James Daniel becomes first vice-president with P Y Tidwell as second vice-president. Virgil Carrington is state director, Bob Burt secretary, Jim Rhea treasurer, Harold Toon and Gil Haugen directors two-year, Wayne Jones and Hollie Smith directors one-year. Installation date to be announced.
Walter T. Tomlinson born 1890 in Alton Texas died April 12 1955 at Veterans Hospital Albuquerque. He was among early Lea County settlers and served in WWI. Final rites were in Lovington Methodist Church with Rev. Hamilton and Rev. Beauchamp officiating. Survivors include his daughter Mrs. E R Williams San Antonio Texas brother L O Tomlinson Hobbs sisters Mrs Lady Manning and Mrs Dora Wildland Hobbs and numerous nephews and nieces.
Scott Bros Drilling Co reported a theft of an 825x17 tire mounted on a Budd Black Wheel. The rig was located nine miles east and two miles south on the Phil Smith Ranch on Tuesday night.
Lovington authorities will start enforcing the state Uniform Motor Vehicle Traffic Law in the coming days. Chief Bill White warns drivers to observe licenses and vehicle tags, avoid common violations, and maintain safe driving to keep the low accident rate.
Alfonzo Campbell reports the theft of 1956 license plates from his 1950 Mercury while the car was in storage. Police records confirm the plates disappeared during storage.
Lovington police reports two Tuesday crashes. Ollie J. Little backing a 1956 Ford coach hit L. E. Bullington in a Ford sedan. Little cited for improper backing. Vehicle damage: Burlington car $100, Little’s car undamaged. Later, Mrs. Sarah Shanks collided a Chevrolet sedan with Norman T. Lee’s Chevrolet. Shanks cited for failure to yield. Lee’s car had minor damage, Shanks’ car undamaged.
Ralph H. Yowell, a Social Security field representative from Roswell, will be in the Lea County Health Department office at the Courthouse from 1 to 3 p m Monday to assist residents with Social Security matters.
Mrs. J. P. Wolfe of Crossroads reported a break in attempt at the Crossroads Bar on Tuesday night. The door was pried and jimmied but not opened, with sacks found nearby suggesting a truck driver may have scared off the burglars.
Jay Caldwell told police his car left the road and hit a brick wall after a raccoon riding on his shoulder poked him in the eye. The vehicle overturned, but no injuries are mentioned.
The chamber of commerce adopts a resolution seeking land reappraisals and sends it to the Federal Land Bank. It argues FLB appraisals have capped farmers seeking loans.
Funeral services were held in Harlandale San Antonio for Mrs. James H. Morgan Sr. mother of James H. Morgan Lovington who died in the past week. The rites were at the Southside Funeral Home Harlandale. Mrs. Morgan had been in failing health several years. Mr. and Mrs. Morgan were active in community life of Antonio and Tulsa.
Entries rise for the 3rd Annual State Championship Roping and Barrel Racing in Lovington on April 28 at the Rodeo Grounds with a $5,000 purse. Early entrants include Don Epps Magdalena Olin Young Lovington and Troy Fort Lovington among others.

Construction includes a west wall at 7th Street, a Whelan frame dwelling with five rooms and bath, and an end carport totaling costs around 7000 dollars and 300 dollars for a Carter Addition.
