In Las Vegas New Mexico 41 demonstrators were arrested Tuesday for trespassing and interfering with staff at New Mexico Highlands University. Bond set at 300 dollars each, arraigned before Magistrate Serrano, and released. Regents met to discuss the sit in and the six demands including resignations of Angel and three administrators.
The Public Service Commission will resume hearings on Hobbs Gas Company's request for a 30 percent rate increase. After three more days of testimony the panel granted a recess for staff to review exhibits and testimony. If the increase is found unwarranted, Hobbs Gas must refund any excess charges.
Clovis auto dealers Robert Pommereing and Cletus Reding were convicted of bribing a former SBA official Moses Sanchez with a $5 000 car in exchange for SBA loan help. U S District Judge Howard Bratton ordered total court costs of 20 460 with appeals window of 13 days.

Governor aide Frank DiLuzio warned New Mexico may face a 20 to 35 million gallon propane shortfall this winter and urged energy companies to voluntarily maintain supplies. He suggested trading distillate energy for other fuels if needed and noted New Mexico retains only 10 percent of its propane production with 20 percent of sales used domestically. Peter Wanagan of the NM Oil and Gas Association warned that preferential treatment could set a precedent for other states.
Five liquor license applicants along the I 40 frontage road west of Albuquerque are relatives of county officials. Bernalillo County Commissioner McCulloch represents them, while State Liquor Director Jaramillo has delayed new licenses. Relatives include Chavez brothers and in law, plus Padilla and Vigil, linked to Undersheriff Padilla and Transit Director Vigil.
Up to 260 military aircraft will crowd skies over south central and southeastern New Mexico from October 2 to October 31 for Operation Braveshield IV. Jets and helicopters will participate, with restricted airspace from 500 to 28 000 feet except near airports at Alamogordo Carrizozo Artesia Ruidoso and Roswell. At a New Mexico Corporation Commission hearing Mountain Bell witness Lee Wallace said Albuquerque one party residential service could rise from 7.55 to 8.15 per month if the firm’s rate computations are approved. The company seeks a two stage 59.2 million increase for its New Mexico customers with the second stage potentially impacting Albuquerque. Wallace also noted study of a directory assistance service charge for telephone numbers in phone books.
Federal prosecutors begin presenting evidence against Vice President Spiro Agnew amid tight security. William J. Muth, ex Baltimore City Council member, testifies as part of a broad corruption inquiry touching Maryland public officials and Agnew links.
Representative Harold Runnels accuses Vice President Spiro Agnew of playing politics by seeking a House investigation into allegations against Agnew. Runnels says only the grand jury and possible trial should determine guilt or innocence, while Manuel Lujan Jr. supports impeachment as the constitutional path.
The State Board of Education approved a 35 million dollar budget for the next school year and asked emergency funds to subsidize school lunch programs this year if federal funds fall short. They declined to act on a subsidy for next year while reporting higher athletic expenditures in many districts and adjustments in bilingual preschool and Roswell rehab center funding.
John Te Dunlop director of the Cost of Living Council says beef prices should fall in weeks ahead as wholesale cattle prices drop up to a third in six weeks. Gasoline prices will rise in the net several days and postal rate hikes face scrutiny by the council with possible hearings and consumer impact concerns.
New Mexico Attorney General sues three invention marketing firms and a construction company in Albuquerque aiming to halt alleged unfair practices that harmed about 300 investors. Idea Development and Marketing Inc with Fred I. Palmer faces securities refunds. BMI is cited as its Arizona operation. Universal Marketing Systems and Select Construction also named. Charmaine Crown notes many complaints.
Lea County 4-H members claimed top honors at the Roswell New Mexico State Fair swine show. Jack Duffey from Lovington Eastern 4-H won the Champion cross bred barrow and Grand Champion. Jeannette McConal from Nadine 4-H Hobbs took Champion Curro and Reserve Grand Champion. Phillip Pearce from Nacwat H club held Champion China. Judge Bobby Lee from Wilson Texas supervised. There were 156 entries.
