Gary D. Askins has been named Lea County Extension 4-H agent for New Mexico State University. His appointment was announced by Eugene Ross. Askins began the new role September 4 and previously served as an NMSU extension manpower information agent in Socorro County. He holds a bachelor’s and a master’s from Sul Ross University, majors in range and animal science, and taught in elementary school for three years. He is married to Martha. His parents live in Pumpville Texas. He joins County Agent Robert F. Howard’s Lea County staff with Paul Kemp Mona B. Porter and Kristine Frederiksen on the team.
Neal Gamm, 25 year old Vietnam veteran and self styled governor, led Forgotonia to surrender after a four day non war with the United States. He sought reconstruction funds from state and federal governments to improve highways recreation facilities and revenues. A planned Summum conference was proposed to discuss tax dollar return.
Newt Campbell 72 longtime area farmer died Friday evening at Lovington General Hospital after a brief illness. He and Mae McGaha moved from Dexter in 1949 and farmed near Lovington. He was a deacon emeritus of First Baptist Church Lovington. Survived by wife Mae two sons Deene Newark NJ Marvin Lovington two daughters Geneva Gable Artesia NM Mary Ruth Pope Boswell OK four brothers W Y Campbell Mitchell Campbell O C Campbell Henry Campbell and four sisters Ava Wolf Martha Wright Freda Riede and 10 grandchildren. Funeral Monday 11 a m at First Baptist Church with Rev H M Stewart and Rev Joe Vernon officiating. interment Lovington Cemetery.
Santiago reports four days after the coup that killed President Allende and installed a military junta. Banks and stores opened during an eight hour curfew lift from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Military forces continued mop up against Allende supporters as sniping persisted in the city.
Interior Department develops a contingency plan for mandatory oil rationing if needed this winter. Secretary Rogers C. Richard Carbajal says tours seek student and faculty input on campus needs and communication with the Legislature. The panel, retooled after the Love Lust incident, has shifted toward aiding institutions with campus issues.
Gibson's Lovington marks its first anniversary as the largest retail site in town. Owned by Gibson's Discount Center of Dallas, the 22,500 square foot store at 1701 South Main employs 29 staff and reports strong community support and steady business growth.

Lea County 4 H members will exhibit livestock at the New Mexico State Fair the week of September 17 25. Gary Haskins says this is the largest number of Lea County exhibitors to attend the state fair. Exhibitors include Mickey Gilmore Ricky Gilmore and many others showing steers lambs barrows and breeding stock with about 35 steers 30 lambs 26 barrows 4-heifers and 40 head of breeding sheep slated for Albuquerque.
Open Range Cowboys Association will hold its annual meeting Saturday September 22 at Lea County Fair Grounds Lovington. A basket lunch is planned at noon and the program features visiting guests. Mark Smith serves as president and Mrs R L Binkley as secretary treasurer.
