A Viking airliner from Gatwick bound for Perpignan crashed into Mt. Rouquette in the Pyrenees amid fierce storms. All 40 aboard died, including 36 British tourists and 4 French crew. The wreckage was found 3,400 feet up the mountain after the craft reportedly missed the peak by about 15 feet.
Thieves raided a Lea County Road Department site 35 miles west of Jal on Tuesday night and stole about $1000 in tools and equipment. Officers seek suspects as missing items include gas gauges a cutting torch hoses jacks tool boxes a water can a clock grease guns gasoline and small hand tools.
A collision at the intersection of Second Street and Avenue F in Lovington at 5:42 p.m. Wednesday caused $750 in damage. Harvey Flynn of Loco Hills, driving west on Avenue F, hit Edgar Harrison. Harrison’s 1962 Ford suffered $500 damage. Flynn’s 1963 Ford, $250. Flynn cited for failure to yield. no injuries reported.
The fall semester at Lovington Community College begins Monday September 16. Registration starts at 6 p.m. and continues Tuesday at Lovington High School where all classes meet. Non credit enrollment is welcome and the program is fully accredited for college credit.
A U S House Un American Activities Committee hearing on illegal student trips to Cuba ended in pandemonium as about 50 officers cleared dozens of demonstrators in beatnik attire. Levi Laub and Barry Hoffman testified amid scuffles with police and audience members.
Sen. Barry Goldwater argues the nuclear test ban pact needs Senate advice instead of only consent. He proposes delaying the treaty’s effective date until Russia withdraws from Cuba and weapons, and warns he would oppose the pact even if reservations pass. In Lubbock Texas undersecretary of agriculture Charles Murphy told about 1 000 Plains Cotton Growers Association delegates that congressional approval of an improved cotton program for 1964 is unlikely. He said allotments and marketing procedures will stay the same, and any new law will aim to protect cotton markets against synthetics and foreign growers. Murphy blamed cotton surpluses on high yields not overplanting, urged tolerance for Washington policy shifts, and compared farm improvements to global market benefits. Wilmer Smith of New Home was elected president, succeeding Fortenberry of Lubbock.
The Federal Alliance of Spanish Land Grants will hold its annual convention at Rio Grande High School Gym Albuquerque on September 21 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. All members and heirs of Spanish Land Grants are invited. Main topic will be the Guadalupe Hidalgo Treaty.

In Hove England 19-year-old gambler Harry Rodgers sent 1000 cash on delivery parcels to bookmakers each containing 144 ballpoint pens. Bookies paid 11.20 dollars each after discovering nothing of value. Rodgers used the funds to bet 8400 on Ragusa in the St Leger and won 7560, leaving some bookmakers seeking a way to recover. Rodgers said he laid out 1500 pounds for the plan and called it worth it.
Lea County four state winners in the National Record Book Contest receive all expense paid trips to Chicago for the National 4-H Club Congress. Winners include Thomas Pearce Nadine 4-H Club for recreation, Rose Ann Duffey Loving ton Eastern 4-H Club swine records, Marvanette Powell McDonald 4-H Club overall records, Dean Davis Knowles 4-H Club overall records, and Mike Pearce Nadine 4-H Club leadership. Santa Fe Railroad and John Deere Company sponsor trips. Ben Robert Powell and others named to represent New Mexico in Washington, D C.
