Lovington residents face a higher tax rate as water bond payments jump from 40 000 to 85 000 for next year and debt from the 1960s water project nears payoff in 1984. The overall tax mix shows a 2 642 mill rise, with school and junior college rates also up, while library and city hall debts have closed.
John Stencel president of the Rock Mountain Farmers Union, visiting Levington, says farmers feel uneasy despite high prices for cotton and beef. He warns production costs rise and future price trends are unclear, with wheat and feed grains showing volatility and potential surpluses later this year.
The Air Force announced a new Advanced Research Technology Facility at Kirtland AFB to study laser beams as they pass through the atmosphere. A Lovington grievance committee unanimously upheld the city manager’s decision to dismiss Hubert Rodgers after a rodeo incident. Witnesses cited unbecoming conduct and loud language while allegedly intoxicated, with Rodgers denying intoxication. The hearing followed a December 1972 city directive on on and off duty conduct and prior warnings.
Two Clovis businessmen Pommerening and Reding face sentencing after being found guilty of offering a former SBA official a Chevrolet Blazer in exchange for help securing a 200000 SBA guaranteed loan for Big County Ford Inc. of Clovis. Rafael Gomez was dismissed from charges for insufficient evidence.
Police rushed to the English Gardens in Munich after witnesses reported an elephant in front of a tavern. Officers found the animal calm with its owner inside a cafe, the university clinic caretaker said the elephant was on a convalescence walk and tied outside for coffee.
About 80 percent of Gallup area gasoline stations shut down in protest of Phase Four rules seen as discriminatory. The move coincides with many travelers headed to the Navajo Tribal Fair at Window Rock, Arizona, and was led by local distributors and jobbers citing mandatory price reductions and quota impacts.
