U S Navy planes bombed a storage area near Hai Phong causing a large petroleum fire while the Gulf of Tonkin saw two Navy jets collide during refueling. Five people die in separate New Mexico crashes. Billy Don Whitt 32 a Ruidoso Downs jockey dies after a truck strikes his horse trailer on I-40 east of Albuquerque. Monroe Powell 64 of Roswell dies after a U S 70 crash near Portales. Marvin Brown 64 of Belen dies in a U S 54 rollover near Corona. Bobby Keene 16 of rural Lubbock Texas dies in a Moriarty area crash. Gilbert Baldonado death linked to a Friday Albuquerque crash.
The 20th Olympic Games resumed with all events one day later despite a terrorist attack that killed 11 Israeli team members and 6 others. Avery Brundage, head of the IOC, declared a day of mourning and said events would proceed, with ceremonies held for the victims as security concerns persisted.
Senator Domenici plans a Saturday night fundraiser in Albuquerque matching a presidential visit by George McGovern. McGovern supporters say he will attend a Sunday rally in Espanola and a Albuquerque fundraiser with Jimmy Stewart and Senator Peter Dominick also on the program. Domenici, in Roswell for the Eastern New Mexico Fair, said the reception there was strong and that meeting voters by shaking hands with about 15,000 attendees was his best approach.
Michael Buckley 39 received a four month suspended term after he struck his wife with a rolling pin in a dispute sparked by suspected drinking. He admitted hitting her when he found she had been drinking.
The Lovington Junior Football League will hold its weekly regular meeting Thursday at 8 oclock in the Liberty National Bank. All league officials members and interested parties are urged to attend.
City records show Lovington issued building permits totaling 58,150 for August. D R Hedley Construction Co received a permit to build a commercial structure at 613 W venue D costing 8,000. Pedro Martinez plans a storeroom at 222 W Avenue F priced at 150. Ace Building Company began a second commercial project at Gum and Curry Streets valued at 50,000.
Governor Bruce King declared Sierra County a state disaster area following a devastating flood in Hillsboro. Two dead, four missing, about 1 million dollars in damages. Federal help requested as National Guard assists cleanup and tetanus shots offered at the school.
James Templeman becomes a new law associate at Sanders and Snipes in Lovington after a summer internship and passing the state bar. A UT Law School graduate, he is completing residency requirements this month as he and wife Sandra seek a Lovington home with daughter Lisa. he is a Farmington native who attended Eastern New Mexico University.
