United Press International reports a Labor Day weekend record of 559 highway deaths, with 713 total fatalities across all causes for 78 hours. Howard Pyle of the National Safety Council cites driver errors as the primary cause, noting violations of center lines in seven crashes.
New Mexico traffic officers logged 13 fatalities over the Labor Day weekend, with nine victims from out of state. A Saturday Deming crash killed seven people, boosting the toll. other deaths included a 15-year-old near Farmington and several local residents in separate accidents. The toll reached 231, down from 290 last year.
Lea Counts Fair and Rodeo prepares for a three day event starting Thursday. General manager Raymond Worrell announced 22 commercial booths and five concession booths will be active by opening day as livestock entries begin at the fair grounds.
President Kennedy's Viet Nam remarks anger Diem officials while UPI notes U.S. restraint on withdrawal. Reports claim an American push to overthrow Diem persists. Diplomatic sources say Kennedy did not clarify policy and the embassy limits asylum to Buddhist leaders.

Casey condemned how aid money was used and Ed Foreman joined in attacking Kennedy over foreign aid cuts.
Lovington Fire Department Chief Rusty Woodward said moisture caused a neon lighting system to short and ignite a fire at Scotty's Lounge on W Ave D. The blaze began around 12 30 a.m. yesterday with little damage reported.
Yesterday saw a high of 84 degrees at 1 p.m. and a low of 64 degrees at 5 a.m., with the conditions reflecting a warm day across the region.
Gov. George Wallace ordered state police to block Tuskegee integration and rushed troopers to Birmingham to challenge federal orders. Kennedy aides warned federal troops may be used if needed as Birmingham planned to proceed with three school integrations Wednesday.
The Justice Department indicated federal troops could be used to enforce desegregation of Alabama public schools if needed. A spokesman said Atty. Gen. Kennedy was awaiting Birmingham's outcome while Governor Wallace’s actions delayed Tuskegee high school integration.

Seven participants compete tonight at the Lea County Fair and Rodeo in Lovington for the county queen honor. The event includes a noon luncheon at Western Grill and a 7 pm arena display at Jake McClure Arena, with judging split 50 50 between personality and horsemanship.
