United Press International reports the Labor Day weekend traffic toll rising toward a record 580 to 585 deaths by midnight. Since Friday 6 p.m. 440 people died on highways with California leading states in fatalities.
Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy ordered additional FBI agents to Plaquemine Louisiana after police used teargas hoses and cattle prods on about 1000 demonstrators. The Justice Department called the Tuskegee Alabama case a local dispute and did not aim for federal action before Tuesday.
Lea County Commissioners meet at the county courthouse in Lovington for a long session listing eleven topics. Items include treasurer's report on interest distribution, district realignment potentially adding a Lea County seat, transfer of a liquor license near the College of the Southwest, and road, budget, and equipment matters.
The Soviet Union accused Albania of trying to seize Soviet property during the 1961 Vlore submarine base evacuation. Western monitors said Radio Moscow reported the claim in a weekend Albanian broadcast targeting the former Moscow satellite. The broadcast also said Albania broke ties with the Warsaw Pact.
Hor ace and Sara Baker, both 26, began settling into 2002 Heather Dr as state police patrolled Del mar Village after three days of protests. Rocks bricks and eggs were hurled at the home during the earlier unrest and demonstrations continued into Friday night before police cleared the area.
In Sheppton Pennsylvania rescuers gave up hope of saving Louis Bova a 52 year old miner trapped since August thirteenth. State Mines Secretary H Beecher Charmebury announced the decision after a meeting of rescue leaders concluded the chamber could not be entered safely. Despite three taps indicating life on August twentieth there was no other sign of life as a shaft was prepared but deemed too dangerous to continue.
Desegregation will begin in Texas on Tuesday with Fort Worth among the largest cities to desegregate. Four Texas towns have started mixed classes, and 53 more districts open desegregated classes this week. By week’s end, Negro students will be in classes with whites or may choose to do so in 236 districts.
A Saturday night storm swept through the Hurst Mobile Home lot at 822 S First St Lovington damaging six mobile homes with an estimated $2000 loss. The tail of a small twister reportedly broke off creating suction that overturned one trailer and ripped a door from a new unit.
Mrs. Hurst rode out a Saturday storm in Hobbs as a funnel toppled a trailer at the mobile home park in Hurst. Bruce Baldwin, 9, called to report a door blown off a trailer. Hurst helped secure weathered units. Lois Driver saw the blue green funnel at 6 40 p m, traveling about 200 feet in the air across Avenue G. The storm caused hail and 1.2 inches of rain in Southwest Lovington with no other damages reported.
The federal minimum wage increases by 10 cents to $1.25 an hour effective Tuesday, affecting about 2.6 million workers and 28 million in covered jobs. The 44 hour standard week also takes effect for large retail and service employers, requiring overtime pay at time and a half beyond 44 hours. Labor Secretary Wirtz lauds the progress of the act, while AFL-CIO pushes for a $1.50 wage.
Kennedy denounces South Viet Nam leadership for repressing Buddhists and losing popular support as the United States vows continued aid. He says the war hinges on Vietnamese backing, calls actions against Buddhists unwise, and urges the Diem regime to regain support for the essential struggle. He also comments on civil rights and tax-cut projections affecting unemployment.

Jimmy Hawkins, 22, was treated at Les General Hospital in Lovington for a self inflicted gunshot wound to the stomach. He was brought in by a Tatum ambulance after accidentally firing a .22 pistol while unloading it.
A Lovington man, Herman Mitchell, was arrested by Lea County deputies at 8 15 p m Sunday for hit and run in Hobbs earlier the same day. He faces charges of driving while intoxicated and driving without a license after investigators tied his car to the incident by a missing chrome strip from the headlight. Mitchell is held on a 725 dollar bond.
