New Yorks federal grand jury opened an inquiry into the steel industry after Judge MeCeGohey swore in 23 members. Subpoenas went to at least nine major firms as steel stocks regained some losses, while officials avoided comment on the probe and pricing policy remains under study.
Hurricane Ginny stalled off the Florida coast drifting erratically toward the north with 75 mph winds. A 175 mile Florida coastline watch was issued from Cape Canaveral to Fort Lauderdale as Cape Canaveral prepared to protect space hardware and residents stockpiled storm supplies.
The United States on Wednesday bluntly rejected Fidel Castro’s call to lift the economic embargo. The State Department tied the stance to Castro’s regime and hostility to the United States, while noting the J. Louis incident involved Cuban jets and multiple firing passes.
A fleet of U S military transport planes carried thousands of troops from Fort Hood Texas to Germany for Operation Big Lift the largest test of American airlift capacity. Nearly 4 000 troops from the 2nd Armored Division arrived in Germany in the first 36 hours. Commanders expect the full 14 500 man division to arrive within 72 hours despite fog and weather delays.
A Birmingham city councilman said Dr. Martin Luther King’s prediction that the city will hire several Negro policemen is near. King had given an ultimatum for 28 new Negro officers or risk mass street demonstrations, but withdrew it.
Lovington High School advanced biology classes conducted a sugar test on sugar beets from the Humble City area. Jim Jameson of the New Mexico- Peco Valley Sugar Beet Association noted sugar contents from 14 to 19 percent, averaging near 19 percent, higher than average.
Yesterday saw a low of 55 degrees at 1 a.m. and a high of 77 degrees by 1 p.m. The day featured mild morning conditions followed by warm afternoon temperatures across the region.

Britain's Prime Minister Lord Home signs away four peerages to fight a Scottish by election as a commoner. The move bars him from the House of Lords and lets him seek Parliament from the Commons, sparking cries of foul from Labor and Liberal ranks. One title surrendered is the Scottish Barony of Home dating to 1473.
A 48 year old Fort Worth man James C. Holder was turned over to Lea County authorities by Las Cruces police. He was arrested in Las Cruces on a Lea County theft complaint from January 1961 charging him with grand larceny for a wrist watch valued at $125. Bond was set at $1.
The Lea County Commissioners awarded contracts for four vehicles and 300 gallons of anti-freeze. Lovington Ford Sales offered the low bid of 5268 for three cars and one pickup, with traded-in 1959 and 1958 models. Blocker El Paso Gas Co. won on anti-freeze bids at 1.30 per gallon for 55 gallons and 1.40 per gallon for 30 gallons in cans.
The U S Department of Agriculture revoked 19 000 acres allocated to Arizona and South Dakota for a southeastern South Dakota plant. New Mexico Pecos Valley Sugar Beet Association officials say test plots show high yield and sugar content boosting prospects for a New Mexico plant. Dry fall days and cool nights are cited as producing beets with top sugar content. Possible shifts may allow three or four new sugar plants in 1966 rather than two.
