Lovington businessman Bill Hawkins is back at work at Turners after hospitalisation for flu complications. He was released Sunday and returned to the job the next day. He is reported to be doing fine.
Larry Whitley of Tatum posted the season’s first perfect entry in the Lovington Daily Leader football pool winning a $5 gift certificate. He missed the tie-breaker but his 14 correct games stood alone. Shirley Blancet finished second with 13 correct picks.
A hearing in the dispute between the Oil Conservation Commission and natural gas producer Michael Grace over well production in southeastern New Mexico has been rescheduled in Santa Fe District Court for November. Judge Thomas Donnelley will hear arguments after legal delays postponed the full hearing. The OCC says the Grace-Atlantic No. 1 order allowing continued production was not properly issued and previously ordered a shutdown for six times allowable production. Grace challenged with a temporary restraining order, which the OCC says was not properly issued.
The Lovington Wildcat Booster Club will meet at Wildcat Gym tonight only at 8:00 per Jerry Ancell. The change is due to conflicts with the annual Back to School programs at the schools.
Lovington owns Piggly Wiggly in Town and Country shopping center has a new owner and will become a Thrift Way. DMC Inc led by Morton and Amarillo figures buys the store. Bill Moore moves to Lovington to manage it. Swafford and Martin of Poodtime Inc sell after 25 years in Lovington.
Former Attorney General Elliotte Richardson declined to say if Nixon should be impeached. He spoke at a televised Justice Department news conference noting the nation's well being is at stake in how Watergate actions are judged after Archibald Cox was discharged.
State police report four fatalities from recent crashes across New Mexico. Victims include Lila James 41 Bakersfield California in an I 40 rollover near Clines Corners and Albert Jolson 17 Church Rock in a US 66 ditch crash Gallup. Mary Anita Russell 20 Raton died from injuries in a Colfax County two car crash. Helen Marie Russell 23 Oklahoma City and Franklin Pucks 54 Seagoville Texas also died in related incidents near Raton on US 87 64.
Lea County's rotary rig count remains in the 20s for the third straight week, with two dozen rigs active this week, matching last week's level and higher than earlier summer totals. Eddy County sees high activity for gas, while Pecos and Ward Counties in West Texas report deeper drilling sparked by rising gas values.
