The Lovington Lea County farmers see sunshine and low humidity boosting cotton and grain to maturity. Early yields look encouraging with more feed cut before frost and cotton starting to come in as prices remain buoyant. The piece also critiques political meddling and calls for policy that expands farm production.
Secretary of State said county clerks would remain open Saturday October 27 to take absentee ballot applications for the November 6 special election. Segan proposed constitutional amendments will be on the ballot for New Mexico voters.

Jackson Avenue Baptist will host a lay renewal weekend starting Friday October 19 with a church dinner and a visiting lay witness team from Clovis New Mexico. The schedule includes services coffees meals youth events a revival Sunday October 28 with Mickey Warlick preaching and Joe Whitten in music and singing.
New Mexico BEF figures show state junior colleges and colleges up 20.2 percent to 6016 head count and 3402 full time equivalents. Hobbs NMJC leads with 1052 students. Carlsbad NMSU branch up 30.6 percent. NMI Roswell up 22 percent. UNM Gallup 610. ENMU Clovis 446. ENMU Roswell 765.
Delbert Stanley Scarbro of Phoenix was pursued by Lea County and NMSP officers after hijacking a pickup with a hostage from Surplus City Store. He surrendered after a roadblock near Tatum, facing charges of kidnapping armed robbery auto theft and aggravated assault with a .55 million bond. Three more suspects are sought in connection with the robbery.
Longview residents reported UFOs over town then millions of tiny silver threads fell from the sky causing frantic calls. Police confirmed the threads posed no danger after a biology book explained the silver threads were webs carrying baby spiders.
Government figures show grocery prices fell in September for the first time since May 1972, led by fresh vegetables and poultry, with dairy and some processed fruits rising. Overall consumer food prices declined 0.7 percent after a 6 percent rise in August, as restaurant meals offset parts of the drop.
The Public Service Commission of New Mexico says it will meet with public utilities within two weeks to outline priorities if a prolonged cold spell hits. Residential consumers would be first, commercial second, and industrial last. Electric companies may be required to stock fuel oil and storage tanks to ensure steady shipments to homes.
State police released a delayed report identifying Ignacio Bustos Jas Verms and Wilson Begay all residents of Thoreau New Mexico as fatalities in separate head on collisions. Bustos 39 died when his car hit a pickup driven by Eddie Solano near NM 266 about 20 miles northwest of Las Vegas New Mexico. Two Solano children were hospitalized and Begay 61 died upon arrival at an Albuquerque hospital after a crash southwest of Cuba. Juan Largo 49 of Cuba drove a truck that collided with Begay’s station wagon. Largo’s vehicle veered into the oncoming car.
Lovington police arrested William H. Higgins age 16 and Edward A. Widman age 15 after a bomb threat to Lovington High School at about 2 40 p m. The call originated from Higgins home and both boys were detained for juvenile court proceedings.
Lea County residents interested in the Status of Women movement in New Mexico may speak at a countywide hearing Monday evening in Hobbs. Mrs Hay Crowder says Hobbs is the only Lea County hearing and Dorothy Cline of Albuquerque will discuss Women’s Goals of 1974 at 7 30 pm at the Woman’s Civic Club building on North Turner. Both men and women are invited.
