Joe Hughes, longtime Leader editor, will move to Carlsbad this weekend to join the Carlsbad Current Argus editorial staff. A Lovington High School graduate, he began at The Leader in 1964, transitioned from circulation to writing and sports, and recently became editor after Paul Foraker. Freddy McCracken is acting editor.
Funeral services were held Thursday at 10 a.m. in Texarkana for Mrs. Jettie Threat 58 sister of J P Homer of 109 North 5th Street. Graveside burial followed in Benjin Arkansas. She died of a heart attack after a prolonged heart condition. Survived by three sons Raymond and Bobby Ethridge of Dallas and James Ethridge of Oregon plus two sisters Mrs Joe Power of Fort Worth and Mrs Fred Sutton of Hope.
President Johnson renews a general invitation for Soviet leaders to visit the United States after meeting with Foreign Minister Gromyko. He says the invite is not new and cited past references in public and private talks to improve exchanges and mutual understanding.
Robert Van Archer aged 49 from 1011 South Love collapsed at his residence around 7 40 P M and was rushed to Lovington. Services are pending at Smith Rogers Funeral Home. The Welcome Exchange item notes the President’s call for an exchange at the highest levels and references U S measures to ease trade with Russia and Eastern Europe. Johnson outlines cautious optimism about U S Soviet relations amid the Vietnam era context.
State Board of Finance gave final approval to new NMSU campuses in Alamogordo and Farmington plus an addition to the Las Cruces campus. The projects total 810000 for business and economics, 160000 for an agriculture addition, and 337500 and 335500 for Alamogordo and Farmington buildings funded partly by federal grants. Once cleared, daytime classes start next fall at all three branch colleges with construction to proceed.
Gail Schmidt, founder of Citizens Acting for Peace, announced in Albuquerque a write-in bid for Congress against Rep. Thomas G. Morris. She is an English student at the University of New Mexico. her husband Paul Schmidt heads the university philosophy department.
