The hopper notes growing dissatisfaction among New Mexico teachers over pay rising 5.58 percent yet not matching inflation. NEA NM warns without responsive legislature and school boards, strikes and militant action could spread, urging unity and caution against union tactics.
Santa Fe New Mexico reports that representatives from multiple counties faced the Legislative Finance Committee to answer questions about heavy equipment purchases. The LFC had accused several counties, including Lea and Rio Arriba, of favoring one supplier and questioned ten purchases in Rio Arriba.
United Press International reports a coordinated protest against the gas price freeze. Houston stations closed and over a thousand on New York's Long Island plan similar actions as White House officials signal plans on propane sales and possible home heating oil rationing for winter.
The Farmers Home Administration Lovington office will close the week of October 1 as staff attend a state meeting in Albuquerque at the Western Skies Motel. Attendees include State Directors from Texas Kansas and Colorado along with National Office leaders. The office will also close October 8 for Columbus Day observance.
Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor Albert Chandler and Rehabilitation Teacher Edward Vigil of the New Mexico Services for the Blind and Visually Handicapped will meet at Lovington Health and Social Services at the Courthouse on Thursday October 4 1973 at 10 00 a m to assist anyone in the area with visual problems.
Hobbs Office hours are 8 30 a m to 5 p m Monday through Friday excluding holidays. Staff assist Lea County residents with retirement survivors disability Medicare or SSI and telephone options simplify forms. North Lea County residents may use the Lovington rep at First National Bank of Lea County 302 S Main on Thursdays 9 00 am to noon.
Environmental concerns were cited as a key factor in the U S energy shortage during a New Mexico Oil and Gas Association panel in Santa Fe. Industry reps warned no quick relief is in sight as they discussed rising gasoline and distillate consumption driven by pollution controls larger cars and more options.
Bernalillo County voters weigh a proposed city county consolidation in Albuquerque. If approved by both city and county voters the measure would take effect July 1 1974 and would blend government under a mayor council charter drafted by a 14 member committee.
Westenburg tops the Lovington Daily Leader weekly football contest with a 40-6 tiebreaker score matching 12 correct picks. Second place goes to Jimmy Essman with 35-6 Hobbs over Kermit and seven off. Several others reach high weekly and season totals, with Cotton Bowl contest standings noted.

Funeral services for Lanius A. Quisenberry age 65 of Tatum were held at 2 p.m. in Smith Rogers Funeral Chapel. He died Sunday after a hospital admission following a sudden illness. Born January 28 1908 in Gainesville Texas he had lived in Tatum a year with his wife Juanita McGinley. Interment followed at Tatum Cemetery with Smith Rogers directing.
Senate Watergate committee staff questioned Gary Hart and other McGovern aides about alleged dirty tricks in 1972. Hart said no spies were used. interviews covered Hart, O'Brien, Van Dyk, Mankiewicz, and Pearlman. Charges tied to Dick Tuck and others surfaced as the panel resumes hearings.
The Nixon Administration released 325000 for Brantley Dam planning on the Pecos River, enabling planning to start this fiscal year. Harold Runnels announced the funds to the Bureau of Reclamation. the dam costs about 245 million and will fund later. The project aims at flood protection and recreation between Artesia and Carlsbad.
At the New Mexico State Corporation Commission hearing in Santa Fe, Groendyke Transport and Whitfield Transportation seek statewide authority to compete with local firms Steere Tank Lines and El Bay Law and Son. Groendyke operates in Farmington. Whitfield in Artesia Arc. Opponents warn competition would harm service. El Bay Law and Son reports 1.8 million in revenue last year with 40 percent growth.
A relief fund is started for Angel Denise Smith a Lovington girl severely burned in a park lot fire last week. She is at Bernalillo Burn Center Albuquerque after the blaze which burned more than 75 percent of her body including her eyes. She can see a little and may be aided by sterilized small toys. Cards letters and donations go to the Burn and Trauma Ward Bernalillo Medical Center Albuquerque. First Assembly of God Church sponsors the fund Liberty National Bank acts as depository.
