Police Interrogate Two Men In Birmingham Bombings
State police in Birmingham interrogated two white men with Ku Klux Klan backgrounds in a series of racial bombings including the Sept. 15 church bombing that killed four girls. Col. Al Lingo named the suspects as R. E. Chambless, 53, and Charles Cagle, 22, both from the Birmingham area. He would not identify them earlier and said those men are being held in connection with the bombings.

Two men questioned after the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, two weeks prior, were taken into custody on an open charge. They remained under intensive questioning at the district state patrol headquarters before transfer to the city jail as secrecy surrounded their movements. Illegal Liquor Salesmen Picked Up By Policemen
Lovington police led by Ser J E Polson arrested five people Sunday on charges of selling in recreating beverages without a license in a roundup of bootlegging establishments. Those taken into custody were Jose M Caveres 30 Joe Lewis Thomas 26 Marlin G Smith 44 Dora Larez 35 and James Anns Chapple 45. Police confiscated 602 cans of beer and seven quarts of Old Mexico whiskey from the Blue Moon Cafe El Serape Cafe the Little Kitchen and the Caves living quarters.

Annual Steak Fry Honors Lovington Teachers at Anderson Ranch
More than 450 people attended the 17th annual steak fry on the W. A. Anderson ranch northwest of Lovington. About 370 pounds of steak were served with beans salad bread donuts coffee and cokes to Lovington school teachers administrators staff and guests hosted by Mr. and Mrs. W A Anderson and others including Senator Harold Runnels. Runnels acted as master of ceremonies while Ed Assoc leaders and local officials spoke and the group sang Happy Birthday for Mary Alice Chandler.

Two Men Sentenced in Lovington Burglary Case
Billy J. Seal 31 Lawton and Darrell D. Seal Hobbs were found guilty by a jury and Monday jailed with Billy receiving six months to a year for breaking and entering and one to ten years for grand larceny to run consecutively. Darrell was placed on probation for two years. Trial began Thursday and ended Friday after seven hours of deliberation.

Theft of tires and tools reported near Den's Bar
J. Wimberly reported to the Lea County Sheriff's office the theft of two farm implement tires on red four hole wheels and several tools valued at about 50 dollars. The theft occurred on the Fay Mond Esses Place one mile east of Den's Bar on the south side of the rose. The tools bear a W on their handles.

Paris UPI report quotes Jules Roy stating Secretary Dulles favored an atomic air strike to relieve Dien Bien Phu in spring 1954 with Eisenhower approving a joint allied plan. Fiery Object Sighted Near Lovington
Bob Woolard at the Denton Gasoline Plant 12 miles east of Lovington reported a daytime meteor sighting Monday at about 8:45 a.m. The object showed a long tail and fragments as it vanished, with Woolard noting it was his first daytime meteor sighting. He alerted the Leader Office around 9 a.m. hoping others observed it.

Man Arrested For Pickup Theft
Fred Villegas, 21, of Denver City Texas, arrested by Lea County Sheriff’s Office at 7 45 p m on charges of vehicle theft. Earlier Jess Treadwell reported Villegas stole his pickup, crossed into Texas, stripped wiring, and abandoned it. Deputies arrested him in Seminole and turned him over to Lea County. Bond set at 1000 dollars.
