President Kennedy will observe a firing at White Sands Missile Range in an exhibition of missile power. The event is set for June 5 with officials confirming the visit and range activities.
Harold L. Brown, 38, was sentenced in Carlsbad to one to 10 years in state prison for the February 2021 slaying of Albin G. Thoren, 55, at a Carlsbad motel. Thoren died from a neck blow after a fight. Brown pleaded guilty to manslaughter as first degree murder charges were reduced. Brown had earlier been jailed on federal car theft charges after Thoren’s car disappeared.
Four senators from both parties introduced a one package farm bill to repeal the feed grain law Kennedy signed last week and block another wheat referendum next year. Led by Sen. Bourke B Hickenlooper the measure backs the American Farm Bureau Federation with co sponsors Sen. George D Aiken and Sen. Spessard L Holland along with Sen. Clinton P Anderson. The bill aims to correct the referendum error and avoid aiding wheat farmers.
Representatives of two national insurers urged the New Mexico state insurance director Monday to approve a 3.7 percent auto rate hike citing underwriting losses of over one million dollars in recent years. The plan would raise Albuquerque driver rates for nonbusiness use over 25 from 45 to 58 dollars, with statewide rates at 33 and 36 for other cases. The hearing sought input to complete a rate decision for about 150 companies operating in the state.
Oklahoma Gov. Henry Bellmon refused to grant a disaster designation to six Panhandle counties hit by drought. He urged farmers to store feed and rely on self-help, comparing a disaster declaration to propping up an oil drill that hits a dry hole. A lawsuit by minority stockholders against Ruidoso Racing Association director Eugene V. Hensley and others will be heard in Lovington on July 9. District Judge Kermit Nash will preside. Judge George Reese is disqualified. The suit seeks a show cause hearing and a lien against Hensley and his former wife Martha E. Hensley.

Houston Evans of San Antonio took second with 86.5 seconds earning $842, Shoate Webster of Lenapoh $561 for third, and Sonny Wright of Ruidoso $280 for fourth. The event featured about 2,000 spectators and 20 contestants with prize money totaling $4,805.

In New York a tense courtroom scene arose as Bobby Randall Wilcoxson, linked to a $35,000 Lafayette National Bank heist in Brooklyn, swore at defense attorney Myron Beldock and threatened to punch him after being questioned about his girlfriend Jacqueline Rose. Wilcoxson admitted firing on guard Henry Kraus, who died, while co-defendants Peter S. Curry and Albert Nussbaum faced charges for the holdup and related crimes.
