Lovington High School captured the 1963 Class A championship in Las Vegas by defeating St. Pius of Albuquerque 11 to 6. Earlier Anthony Gadsden secured third place by beating Las Vegas Robertson 13 to 4.
Lovington dominated the Class A all state baseball selections announced in Las Vegas on Saturday. Six Lovington players earned berths on the 12 man mythical lineup including Harmon Shields James Scheschuk Bob Gruis Steve Bridgforth Ken Williamson and Robert Allen among position players.
President Kennedy traveled to Ashville Tennessee Nashville Muscle Shoals and Huntsville drawing large crowds including 225000 supporters with Governor Wallace greeting him at each stop. Kennedy urged end to prejudice and praised TVA while omitting racial references on space aims. Actress Tallulah Bankhead attended Huntsville rally.
Harmon Shields opened on an error as Floyd Lowery doubled and scored. Lowery crossed on a miscue, Bridgforth drove in Williamson and Shields. By five, Lovington led 10-3. In the sixth, Tom Long’s three-run double fueled a St. Pius push, then Lovington answered. Seven halted by pitching changes and defensive plays. Lovington advances after a chaotic rally, with Scheschuk, Gruis, Williamson, and Allen homering in a 11-2 morning victory.
Baccalaureate for the 1963 Lovington High School class is tonight at 8 in Parnell Auditorium with Bob Lindley delivering the sermon "Up, Take That Mountain." Graduation exercises follow Thursday at 8 with 115 seniors and Dr. Kenneth Hansen delivering the commencement address in the same venue.
A 53-year-old Lovington man, L. V. Morris of 702 S Second St, remained in critical condition at Lovington Lea General Hospital Saturday after a Friday 5 41 a m collision. Morris suffered a skull fracture a facial fracture and scalp lacerations when his 1961 Chevrolet collided with a 1963 International Scout pickup.
A Friday morning crash at the South Commercial Street and East Avenue intersection left pickup driver Dyer with head cuts after a stop sign violation by Morris. The Chevrolet collided broadside, spun into a ditch, and both vehicles were totaled.

All Lovington retail merchants are urged to attend a 7:30 p.m. meeting Tuesday at the American Legion Hall 317 S Love St. The session will discuss and vote on a proposal from the Retail Trades Planning Committee of the Chamber of Commerce.
Dolores Norine Allen 16 died after an auto mobile accident Tuesday night at Lovington Lea General Hospital. Funeral services 10 a.m. Monday at Smith Yarbro Funeral Chapel. Rev. J Samuel Phillips officiating. Burial in Lovington Cemetery. Pallbearers will be sophomore classmates. She was born February 6 1947 in Artesia, student at Lovington High School, survived by parents Oscar J and wife in east star route three brothers and two sisters.
Lovington saw about 2 inches of rain in three hours from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday as a squall line moved through. Temperatures fell 12 degrees to 62 before 5 p.m. Power transformers got wet and a pair of poles were struck by lightning near Tatum and east of Lovington, per Lea County Electric Cooperative.
Members of the Wilhoit Post of the American Legion meet Monday at 7 30 p m to discuss annual Memorial Day plans. The meeting will be in the Hall across from Pearl’s Ing House and all Legions are urged to be present. Memorial Day is held each year within the Legion VFW and men’s auxiliaries of the organizations with all taking part.
