Hobbs police logged six minor automobile accidents on Friday. First at 6:09 p.m. a 1957 Chrysler driven by Jones Todwell of 320 East Lea collided with a 1957 Chevrolet tractor driven by Basil Cowan of Plains Hotel, Chrysler towed with $5 damage. tractor undamaged.
The 2nd Annual Doodlebug Golf Tourney will be held at Lovington Country Club on May 25 starting at 8 A.M. Players must complete 18 holes and entries are open to those in geophysical work. Prizes include a low-score trophy and various other rewards while contests for putting, chipping, and driving are planned.
Robert Pritchett of Carisba appointed as State Welfare Director to replace longtime leader Murry Hintz. He moves from Gasoline Tax Director with the Bureau of Revenue to assume the helm of the Welfare Department.
Torrential rain swept Lovington and surrounding areas on Friday afternoon nearly reaching Hobbs. Official rain gauges logged 1.1 inches with unofficial county reports up to 2 inches. Streets flooded, sandbags deployed, hail damage reported in McDonald and Prairie View, and county agent Jim Gilstrap notes damaged cotton seed will need replanting due to washouts.

The nation’s famous bear Smokey will be honored in his Capitan hometown next Saturday. Smokey and a playmate were rescued from a forest fire seven years ago. The Capitan Women’s Club sponsors the all day celebration with invitees including Boy Scouts of the Conquistador Council.
Senate investigators claim evidence proves President Dave Beck stole over 322000 from his Teamsters Union. Testimony by A M Burke of Occidental Life Insurance Company cited Beck’s 1951 financial statement as not listing such a loan.
Reporters at a Hartford high school baseball game mistook the action when each of the two pitchers introduced as Bob Carlson appeared to be the same player. Both are right handed and shared the mound creating confusion for observers.

New Mexico reports two additional fatalities bringing the total to 125. Grego R. Corona, 27, from Carlsbad, died on Highway 284 near Loving after a curve error caused a fatal overturn. He suffered crushed chest and head injuries. In Albuquerque, 69-year-old William Galloway died from injuries after his car struck a curb and a light pole.
Clovis holds the Southwestern League lead after edging Plainview 6 5 to drop the Ponies to fourth place 44 games back. Ballinger defeated Carlsbad 3 2 to take over second, remaining three games ahead of El Paso which beat Midland 9 5 to claim third. San Angelo at Hobbs was rained out.

Lovington National Bank announces a million dollar excess insurance policy through Lloyds of London and the Bank-Share Owners Advisory League. The cover adds protection for depositors stockholders and directors beyond FDIC limits, making Lovington first in town to carry the coverage.
Police report a woman’s body recovered from debris after a three story brick tenement collapsed in New York City. At least one other person is believed trapped in the rubble.
In Manorville New York seven year old Kenny Hooper was trapped for 24 hours under sand in a home well. A team led by Sam Woodson and John Arambo used a tunnel and a vacuum pump to free him as police fire and construction crews assisted. The boy remained conscious and thanked his rescuers as the crowd cheered.
