Technicians assemble two silvery sun shades as three space repairmen prepare to lift them aboard Skylab next Friday for the first orbital salvage mission. Skylab 1 crew Charles Conrad Joseph Kerwin and Paul Weitz practice rigging an awning sized shelter for the repair work.
A dead calf struck on the roadway near Dan's Bar led to a $50 fine for Floyd Jones in Lovington magistrate court. He admitted taking the carcass from the right of way and transporting it about 10 miles north where he dressed it, leaving the remains. The calf belonged to Walter Lawrence. Deputy Tom Peveler arrested Jones after a tip.
Senator Joseph Montoya proposes an amendment to exempt disaster victims from repaying up to 4000 of federal loans. The plan would let Farmers Home Administration and SBA issue low interest loans with partial repayments based on loan size, aiding ranchers and farmers hurt by winter snowstorms and floods in northeastern New Mexico.
Federal funds crunch led the Bureau of Land Management to drop a plan to spray 15,000 acres of mesquite on public grazing land in Lea and Eddy Counties New Mexico. The Natural Resources Defense Council sought an injunction in US District Court to halt spraying, arguing an environmental impact statement was required. The BLM had agreed to a stipulation keeping the case on the dock as it already decided not to spray due to funds and no significant environmental effects.
In Las Vegas Amarillo Slim Preston of Amarillo Texas built a lead in the Worlds Series of Poker finale after four hours of hold em freezeout play. Jack Straus of Houston challenged but Slim held about $60 000 in chips while others trailed. Bob Huff of Houston stood second with $17 325 and Puggy Watty of Nashville was third with $14 075.
McCord testifies during the Watergate hearings that a former White House aide said Nixon knew of plans to buy his silence with clemency after prison. He cites pressure from John Caulfield and says backers included John Mitchell, John Dean, and Jeb Magruder.
Purchasing Agent C. R. Sebastian said the state may rebid its bulk gasoline contracts in June or July to obtain a better price. He noted December bids were light and a earlier sale might improve price climate.
Lt. Gove Robert Mondragon asks US Rep. Harold Runnels to back an amendment to the Highway Safety Act of 1966 to enable federal funds for highway safety programs on Indian reservations. Mondragon says current rules bar Indian police use of federal highway funds and seeks radar equipment aid amid funding gaps. Sebastian notes low December bids due to emergency, and NM State Highway Department prepares for gasoline shortages while prices remain 25 to 26 cents per gallon in bulk contracts. We will monitor supply and seek better pricing if bids reopen.
Lovington seniors in the Class of 1973 earned numerous scholarships noted at the Parnell Auditorium awards assembly. Recipients include Joe Anderson at West Texas State University with a $1200 academic scholarship and $200 choral grant, Steve Ayeno at Tulane University with $1900 academic aid and $600 loan, Elaine Williams at Lubbock Christian with $1400 band and academic aid plus $1600 work study, and many others totaling about $10,000 in scholarships.

In Winchester England James Lilly, 51, already on probation, faced 66 burglaries and stated prison is his only home. A court sentenced him to five additional years.
Vice President Spiro Agnew told about 1,000 Georgia business leaders that food price increases are moderating and the worst is past. He predicted inflation would decline while the economy slows, citing steps to boost farm supplies and a broader worldwide boom in wholesale prices.
Portales officials and a bilingual education expert clashed in U S District Court over proposals to avoid discrimination against Mexican American students. Dr Cecilia Orozco deemed the district plan inadequate, contrasting it with a 460 minute weekly bilingual proposal from Mexican American students.
Richard Villines, 34, of Santa Fe, a staff member at the Santa Fe Drug Rehabilitation Center, goes on trial for possessing and selling heroin. He and several other center employees were arrested in December raids, suspended, then allowed to return at lower pay. A jury of seven women and five men was seated.
A joint blood drive and benefit fund for Jane Jaquess will be held Tuesday May 22 in Loving at the Lea County Electric Community room from 12 until 6 pm. Donations may be given at the blood bank or via First National Bank or New Mexico Bank and Trust. Mrs Jaquess, a McDonald area farmer's wife, is hospitalized in Lea General Hospital Hobbs with a lengthy illness and has received multiple transfusions.
Four suspects were jailed after a raid in La Luz that yielded 107 bricks of marijuana and multiple cocaine and hashish items. District Attorney Norman Bloom called it the county's largest illegal drug seizure, with air surveillance backing a three week investigation. The four face possession with intent to sell and related charges, each held on 15000 dollars bond.
