Col James Lindberg Hughes, a prominent returning POW, will visit Lovington Sunday to speak at the 11 o clock service of First United Methodist Church. He will be guest of Rev Edwin Chappell and accompanied by his wife Darthy. Hughes, born June 11 1927, served in the Navy and Air Force, spent most of his captivity in Hanoi Hilton, and was released in 1973.
Thirteen inmates and paroles from the New Mexico State Penitentiary are scheduled to graduate this spring from New Mexico colleges, some with honors. Roger Rame will graduate magna cum laude with a bachelor of business administration degree. Other graduates include Williard Daniels Paul Sharpe and Rickey Jamee gan Lloyd Miller with associate degrees, and Anthony Pace with magna cum laude honors. Beatrice Gardner and Diane Slaugh-Doyle Smith also complete bachelor degrees, while an unidentified student earns a bachelor’s from Highlands University and another from Alba-Querme Technical Vocational Institute in auto mechanics.
Former state policeman Mike Armendariz pleaded guilty to conspiracy in a scheme to file insurance claims on wrecked cars. The fraud charge was dropped after he changed to a conspiracy plea before Judge Thomas A. Donnelly.
Title I students will present a short End of School program for parents at Llano Elementary School tonight at 7 30. A P A C meeting precedes the program with election of new officers and a discussion of Title I activities led by outgoing president Joe Trujillo.
Dean, fired last week as White House legal counsel, was summoned before Senate investigators for questioning under oath about the Watergate affair. He said he would tell the truth and not shoulder blame for anyone. Gray, former FBI Acting Director, was also called to the federal courthouse as the grand jury considers more indictments.
In Croydon UPI report a bankruptcy court heard a bank computer credited $15,000 to a man who had deposited $15. Witnesses said the man spent the funds, left his home and was believed in West Africa.
Lovington DeMolays announce their annual pancake breakfast for Saturday morning May 12 from 5 30 am to 11 00 am. Tickets cost 1 00 each and permit all you can eat. Tickets available at John's Drive In Mac's Shell Station or at the door.
Pinning ceremonies for the 1973 graduating class of Associated Degree Nurses at New Mexico Junior College will be held at 7 30 p m Saturday May 12 in the Fine Arts auditorium with a reception in the Student Center. Speakers include Dr William F Pike Mrs Elizabeth Loyd and Dr Jodie C Smith with 22 students named to receive pins.

Barry M. Lovejoy of Lovington earned a $650 National Merit Commended scholarship at Oklahoma Christian College in Oklahoma City. He was among eight National Merit Commended scholars. 21 tuition grants, 62 ACT scholarships, 48 leadership scholarships, and four National Merit Finalists receiving $1060 annually were announced. Alan Rister of Denison Texas won the largest full tuition plus room and board scholarship. Charles Clinger of Fort Worth and Jennifer Jackson of Apache, Okla., received half-cost awards.
Mrs. Julia Webb aged 92 died at Lea General Hospital Lovington after a 10 day illness. She lived with her daughter at 325 W Ave B Lovington and had been a resident here 14 years. Funeral Friday May 11 at 3 pm Texas time at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church eight miles NW of Post with interment at Terrace Cemetery Post. Bro Lesley Welch to conduct. She was a 75 year Baptist member and is survived by three children Hugh Webb Levington Evelyn Meeks Post and H R Lacy, 12 grandchildren 25 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
A Texas convict named Bogden, who shot Corpus Christi police Lt. J C Whidden, was sent back to Texas after New Mexico extradition papers were found impro per and late. Lt. Gov. Mondragon signed documents 20 minutes before a court deadline, averting an early release and prompting notes of procedural flaws by officials.
A Cub Scout Leaders Training Course will be taught tomorrow at First United Methodist Church in Hobbs. The morning session begins at 9 o clock for cub masters assistants den coaches den mothers and committeemen. Free babysitters will be provided and refreshments served attendees should bring sack lunches. Bob Carter of the district committee invites packs to attend.
Lea County Electric Cooperative reports 1972 revenues of 4.29 million, up from 3.82 million in 1971, and operating margins rising to 716 thousand with non operating margins pushing total to 992 thousand. Annual meeting is Tuesday at Parnell Auditorium.
Federal figures show Curry County had 172 of New Mexico’s 410 subsidy recipients and $1,285,568 in payments, nearly half of the state total. John Garrat Jr. led individual recipients with $110,000, followed by George Hammond. The subsidies flow under the 1970 Agricultural Act for crop curtailment and conservation compliance. Kings Valley Irrigation also received funds.
The Senior MYF of First United Methodist Church sponsors a Mother's Day dinner on Sunday May 13 at 12:00 in the church fellowship hall. Adult tickets are $1.50, children under ten eat for 75 cents. Everyone is welcome.
U S Congressman Harold Runnels will present a World War II Purple Heart in his Lovington office on Saturday morning at 9. Ralph Weems of Lovington, employed by the Lea County Road Department, was wounded in the Philippines on April 29, 1945. The ceremony takes place in the Reed McCrory Building.
Carroll Hunton of USDA Farmers Home Administration announces Rural Youth Loans under the Rural Development Act of 1972 for members under 21 in towns under 10 000. Loans cover farm and nonfarm projects including livestock equipment and tool purchases. Details via David C. Radley Lovington NM.
