Lovington City Commission, acting as a board of equalization, assessed taxes on 52 residents who had not sent occupational tax forms. A protest hearing is planned. Budget hearings were scheduled with the state auditor for June 13 and 14, covering nearby towns Tatum Hobbs Eunice Jal.
A Tuesday 5 p.m. crash on North Main and Madison left a 1965 Mustang with about 200 dollars in damage after skidding on wet pavement into a utility pole. Driver Travis N. Emerson, 20, and two passengers were uninjured. City commissioners also planned bids for water pipe and approved numerous utility and supplier payments totaling many hundreds of dollars.
Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee he does not foresee calling up reserves or National Guard in the current year unless a sudden military emergency arises. He said the United States is militarily prepared to meet its commitments worldwide and has met troop needs in Vietnam without using reserves. He noted reserves would be summoned only if a significant emergency occurred, but he does not anticipate such action this year.
City police logged a break-in at the Teenage Cafe on the hill. Winnie Williams reported the crime, which occurred last night or early today. The thief pried open the north door and a juke box was forced, with about $25 in change stolen. Police continue with the investigation.
The Rt. Rev. James A. Pike announced he will resign as Episcopal bishop of California, a diocese covering 10 counties in northern and central California. Known for controversial views, he has faced multiple heresy accusations since 1960 over questions on the virgin birth and the Trinity, though he denies departing from doctrine.

About 400 people from 865 Methodist Church churches in the New Mexico Conference are expected for the annual meeting May 16 to 19 in Las Cruces. The churches total 365 000 members. Bishop W Angie Smith will preside over the three day gathering. Main speaker is Dr Robert E Goodrich Jr pastor of First Methodist Church Dallas and creator of The Pastor the weekly national television program.
Sen John G Tower said at a League meeting in El Paso that the National Equal Employment Opportunity Commission should include a Latin American commissioner and that the body be expanded from five to seven members He has introduced a bill to enlarge the commission and appoint a member of Latin American background.
