Rep. Emanuel Celler vows a last ditch battle to keep the Mrs. Murphy case from being exempted in Johnson's fair housing plan. He supports the owner occupied unit provision and will fight for every inch of it. Michigan safety push and food for peace funding are also discussed.
The Lovington Association for Retarded Children holds its final regular meeting of the term Thursday at 7 PM in Yarbro School audio visual room. Allen Coggins of Albuquerque, from the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, will discuss joint school work programs and the half day school half day work plan for special education. The meeting invites interested people and Lea County business leaders, with the next gathering set for September 1.
Walter P. Reuther president of the United Auto Workers told Congress that auto makers could add safety features with little or no price rise. He urged the House Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committee to set flexible safety design standards to compel adoption of proven safety measures.
Senator Robert F. Kennedy calls for renouncing unilateral intervention in Latin America after the Dominican Republic action. He urges consultation with the Organization of American States and advocates a Marshall Plan style aid program to ease anticipated regional change while improving social and economic conditions. He says past intervention damaged ties but need not be irreparable.
The regular session noted re nominating losses for Moates and Easley while both vowed to serve until December 31. Residents Richards requested action on a drainage issue along State Highway 18 near McDonald and a petition was presented. Road work on Jal school grounds and Cemetery Road was reported to finish this week. The west end road toward the Chaves County line may be extended by December 31. Election canvass confirmed outcomes with minor corrections. A state tax sale request was approved for Lea County land at public auction May 25.
An eight year old Lovington boy, Clifford Dale Odom, is in fair condition at Lea General Hospital after his mother's 1964 Pontiac collided with a 1961 Olds station wagon driven by Lorton B. Borman. Borman received a citation for failure to yield right of way. The crash occurred shortly before noon on South First Street at West Avenue L, causing about 1400 dollars damage to the Odom vehicle and 750 dollars to the Borman car.
At Loving ton Public Library during National Library Week, Mrs. Lawrence Davis stressed the library as a public enterprise. Over 300 school children toured the facility receiving guidance on book care and use, with staff telling the children that the library belongs to you.
Lucy M. Sanchez 29 and Linda F. Cepeda 18 of 622 North Love were fined 25 dollars each in justice court after being arrested Monday for shoplifting merchandise valued at nine dollars from the Ben Franklin store near the public building. Last week they received thank you notes from children. One junior visitor said I have never owned a library before.
Lovington city commission will meet tonight at 7. Agenda includes reading minutes unfinished business on utilities for Demore trailers set date for tentative budget hearing by May 24 bids for water pipe and fittings payment of bills review of unrendered Occupation Tax reports and set assessments.
A Wooster scientist warns that record low temps may wipe out northern Ohio’s commercial fruit crop. Complete damage checks await warmer days. In 1964 the region produced over half of Ohio’s $15 million fruit crop, with Akron area lows at 24 degrees causing over $1 million in damage.
Taylor and Central Junior High Schools held National Junior Honor Society inductions last week, total 65 new members. Taylor added 43 and Central 22, with candle lighting and explanations of the five traits scholarship leadership service citizenship and character.
A 40-year-old Lovington woman escaped injury when a fire at the James Willyard apartment in Odessa broke out. Mrs. Ann Livesay, 40, was sleeping on a living room couch and avoided harm. Mrs. Willyard, 42, died trapped near the bathroom door while trying to save her Pekinese. her husband suffered facial and arm burns. investigators suspect a cigarette started the blaze.
Possible thunderstorms or light showers tonight and Wednesday with a 30 percent rain probability. Slightly cooler Wednesday with lows near 50 and highs around 74. Lovington records show a high of 65 and low of 49, while nationwide temps range from 103 at Presidio Texas to 18 at Lexington Ohio.
Local report shows Lovington has accumulated 2.58 inches of precipitation year to date in 1966, marking the latest tally for the community's weather record.
M Sgt George Rhodes announces changes to Air Force reenlistment rules for prior servicemen and invites high school seniors and others to Lea County Courthouse basement Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m. for information and guidance.
James E. Culbertson, 28, of Lovington, charged with unlawful possession of dangerous drugs and released on a $500 bond after Monday arrest by the Lea County Sheriff's Office. Earlier, he and his wife faced a charge of contributing to dependency and neglect of their minor children.
A 17 year old from Hobbs who was to appear as a witness in Lea County District Court was fined twenty dollars for contempt of court after arriving late. He paid the fine but was later re arrested on disorderly conduct and foul language charges and is being held by juvenile authorities.
The Levington chapter of the Future Farmers of America will hold its annual Parent and Son Banquet at the LHS cafeteria Saturday at 7 p.m. James Leview, chapter secretary, announced the event.
