The Motor Vehicle Department issued friendly cautions to 2,610 drivers in the first four months. The Driver Services Division reports 34,528 citations statewide from January through April, with warnings typically following a second citation from official Thomas H. Moar.
The Motor Vehicle Department reports improved enforcement of driving violations due to better courts adherence and use of the uniform traffic citation. The division may revoke licenses for DUI or related felonies and can withdraw driving privileges for poor records or failed tests.
Wayne Benson and Clggence J. Harris of the sheriff's department arrested three men Saturday at 8 30 a m. all charged with fighting disorderly conduct and being drunk. Novel Ponte Bouldin 22 of Lovington led a group struggled with officers before cuffing. Ernest Evans Jr. jailed after pleading not guilty with a May 10 hearing set. Joe Thomas Lewis 35 pleaded guilty and was jailed 30 days. Bond set at 100 250 and 500 dollars respectively.
A Potter County grand jury was empaneled Monday to hear evidence against Billie Sol Estes. The panel meets May 17 with May 24 as the earliest date for presenting the Estes case. Attorney General Will Wilson compiled evidence on alleged Estes antitrust violations across courts of inquiry.
Texas financier Freeman claimed three department officials may have favored Estes, with two no longer with the department. Williams disputed Freeman at a news conference, while a Texas attorney general letter cited evidence of a close Estes department relationship and named possible officials. The official cited two cases of alleged preferential treatment. The first was Estes' November 1961 appointment to the National Cotton Advisory Committee despite an October report alleging illegal transfer of cotton allotments. The second involved a bond set at 700000 dollars for grain storage, despite storage capacity rising from 26.6 to 50.9 million bushels.
Attorneys for Billy Sol Estes filed a partial financial statement with Judge Thomason. He set a May 23 public hearing for 564 creditors to present evidence and finalize claims. Estes shows assets of 54.1 million and liabilities of 17.8 million, not counting contracts for ammonia tanks. The state of liabilities remains uncertain as records are examined by a creditor committee and trustee in the bankruptcy. Government grain storage aims to recover funds, with a $10 million bond secured by Lloyds of London insurance to protect the Commodity Credit Corp. and decisions on continued use of Estes facilities pending.
President Kennedy told the United Auto Workers that the administration supports restraint and public interest in wage deals. He warned that higher wages are meaningless if prices rise and urged unions to consider the broader impact.
A forest and grass fire of about 500 acres northwest of Mora was brought under control early today. It began Monday on the Juan Vigil Ranch eight miles north and west of Mora. About 40 people from state police mounted patrols Forest Service and Montezuma seminary fought the flames through the night near Lucero. Two Forest Service workers remained at the scene with mobile pumpers to prevent flare ups.
Weekend police activity included break ins at Campbell's Farm and Ranch Supply and the Crown Service Station with minor damage and cash left behind. A monkey wandered the alley and was captured soon after. The Eastern New Mexico University Theater Workshop will stage Salome by Oscar Wilde on May 18 with Nina McGuffin in a lead role.
Playboy Club bartenders and bunnies dispute union representation. Bartenders allege free drinks for bunnies while the women seek hotel workers union Local 278. About 55 male staff sign a petition, prompting management action and potential labor friction.
The R. R. Ellison grocery at Buckeye burned late Saturday afternoon. Levington firefighters saved the filling station and post office, but the grocery, seized by flames, could not be saved. Loss estimated at $7000 plus and partially insured. Cause undetermined. Fire was controlled about an hour after it started.
Morning lines formed at most of Lovington eight polling places with limited parking. By 10 am turnout was generally considered good as precincts reported steady if slowed lines.
