Lea and Eddy Counties in New Mexico were among 59 areas in 17 states starting to use Agriculture Department food coupons this month. Secretary Orville Freeman said 13 counties now participate, including San Miguel Colfax Mora Rio Arriba Sandoval Santa Fe Taos Chaves Harding Quay and Mora.

Auto Kills Hobbs Boy
A six year old Hobbs boy was struck by a car and killed instantly becoming the state's 138th traffic fatality of the year. Police identified the victim as Mark Boone. The driver was Opel Dickey, 56, also of Hobbs. The toll at this time last year was 138.

Wholesale Prices Rise As Living Costs Inch Up In April
The Labor Department reports wholesale prices rose 0.1 percent in April after a March pause, offset by gains in industrial commodities despite declines in farm products and processed foods. The report notes a 3.7 percent year over year increase and a drop in unemployment to 2.8 million, with teenagers facing the highest jobless rate at 12 percent.

Mechem Backs Cargo In New Mexico Governor Race
Edwin L. Mechem, former New Mexico governor and GOP official, said he will back David Cargo in the November general election. Mayor Calls Great Society Hollow Amid Crime Rise

Two Lovington Accidents Damage Four Cars
Two crashes on Thursday evening in Lovington damaged four vehicles within three hours. At about 5 p.m. Mildred Osborn and Betty Winkles collided on Main Street when Winkles opened a car door into traffic. Osborn’s 1966 station wagon sustained $40 damage and Winkles’ 1957 Buick $125. Around 8 p.m. Christopher Allen’s 1956 Oldsmobile hit Virginia Fine’s 1963 Volkswagen on South Main near Avenue I. Allen’s car suffered about $185 damage while Fine’s sustained about $400. Fine was cited for following too closely.

Court Forces Transfusion For EP Boy
In El Paso a 10 year old boy named David Calderon, son of Mr and Mrs Salvador Calderon, was saved after a district court judge issued an emergency room blood transfusion order. Police and hospital officials had pleaded with the parents, Jehovah's Witnesses, over three hours as hemmorrhaging threatened the boy's life. Judge William Ward authorized the transfusion and exempted the hospital and doctors from civil action.
