Lovington merchants meet to discuss and vote a proposed local trading stamp program run by the chamber of commerce. The plan would let the chamber buy sell and issue stamps redeemable at participating merchants to keep money local and attract out of town trade.
Washington reports the Treasury backs a GOP plan to redefine the national debt and delay increases. The proposal would exclude cash on hand from the debt limit calculation, letting Congress push Sept. 1 debt decisions to later, easing political resistance. Treasury fears it could be seen as an escape trick.
Winston Churchill, 88, announces he will not stand for re election to the House of Commons citing mobility problems from a leg fracture and age. He writes to Woodford constituency officials that retirement follows a long career and his departure raises questions about a general election.
Senate investigators report auditors could not locate reliable cost figures to judge the TFX fighter plane bids from General Dynamics and Boeing. GAO head Campbell and McNamara say Air Force estimates and contractor estimates are unusable, making independent review futile.
Michael E. O Grady of Lovington has qualified for an Air Force Academy appointment. He turned 18 on April 29, was president of Lovington High’s National Honor Society and Latin Club, active in Student Council, and Alabama? Wait. He also played football and tennis and served as an honorary NM State Legislature page.
A meeting at 7:30 p m in the Lea County Electric Cooperative room invites Lovington merchants and chamber members to discuss a proposed local trading stamp program run through the chamber. The Retail Merchants Committee will present merits and drawbacks before a vote.
The Senate rejected a 200 million cut to the 450 million public works program, boosting Kennedy’s position. The measure passed 60 to 26, ensuring the $1.5 billion supplemental bill moves to House-Senate conference as the program nears final approval despite earlier House resistance.
Former Captain Arthur J. Jackson of San Jose says he will not attend a Medal of Honor ceremony at the White House, citing that his presence could embarrass President Kennedy. Carl Henderson owner of Troy Theatre opened Troy Used Car Sales on West Ave D beside his theatre. The new shop offers a complete line of used cars and will act as selling agent for private cars. Henderson is a Lovington resident and former manager of Lea and Wildcat theatres and co owner of Henderson Brothers Service Station.
Soviet leaders staged a weapons display for Fidel Castro with missiles shown for Cuba. Premier Khrushchev and officials praised Cuba while U.S. diplomats boycotted the parade. Rodion Malinovsky warned of a nuclear war if the United States attacked Cuba. Televised remarks were restrained and no new aid pledges were made.
Eighty four junior high school teachers of mathematics and general science were chosen from 1500 applicants for two National Science Foundation summer institutes at Southwestern Oklahoma State College from June 3 to July 25. John O. Hogue of Lovington was accepted into the mathematics institute and will join a staff that includes Dr A Reynolds and Dr Gerald McKellips.
Five scholars at the AAAS Desert and Arid Zones symposium in Albuquerque warned Western states face severe but solvable water and resource challenges. They urged recognizing aridity limits, planning for security, and pursuing economic substitutes while noting potential growth if future prospects are managed.
