Lea County Democrats announce precinct meetings Saturday May 3 for delegate selection to the Lea County Democratic Convention. Precincts list locations and delegate totals with Hobbs, Crossroads, Caprock, Tatum, Glad, Lovington, and other areas. The county convention is May 10 in the Lea County Courthouse meeting room.
New Mexico's medicaid program ended today after $17 million in fiscal year funds exhausted in ten months. About half of the 1,115 elderly in nursing homes could qualify for $84.70 monthly general assistance, while others faced transfer or loss of care. Gov. Cargo would need a special session and extra appropriations to resume the program, with potential tax changes under consideration.
A delegation of about 10 Black Students Organization members meets NMSU officials to press demands after an anti ROTC protest in which a black student was struck by a stick. They seek expulsion of the student who allegedly threw the stick and a public apology, plus a black studies program, hiring of Black administrators and staff, and full accreditation.
Building permits for April total 59 550 with multiple residential requests. Lone Star Welders at 1020 North Main gets 600 to add a room. Art Bintz applies for two residences at 830 and 836 West Aspen each 16 000. Ed Hollingsworth receives a fence permit at 1213 West Tyler with no estimate. Richard Dillon at 501 West Polk adds a room for 3 000. Sunset Construction to build a residence at 1309 West Ave H for 23 000. S L Williams at First and Ivy adds a room for 800. C B Bryant at 1115 South First will build a shed for a camper at 150.
The Justice Department filed suit in Albuquerque charging Continental Oil Co American Petrofina and Spencer and Co with conspiring to fix asphalt prices for New Mexico highway work. The suit alleges a 1963 onward monopoly effort in inter state asphalt trade with Spencer as exclusive agent for Petrofina and Continental. New Mexico purchased 840000 barrels of paving asphalt since 1963.
Weather in Lovington shows low cloudiness and patchy fog morning hours with partly cloudy skies later and isolated thunderstorms tonight and Friday. Temperatures hold with a low around 55 and a high near 85. statewide New Mexico sees few afternoon or evening thundershowers and early morning clouds southeast, otherwise fair with little temperature change, tonight’s low around 30 to 45 in the north and 40 to 55 in the south.
Mrs. Frederick Cohn of the League of Women Voters reminds that May 6 1969 is the last day to register for delegates to the Constitutional Convention. Absentee ballot processes run May 2 to June 16 with various pick up and mail deadlines, urging voters to secure their rights despite possible date variations.
About 1 45 pm yesterday two trucks sideswiped four miles east of Malla resulting in 19 cattle killed. The 1966 International truck driven by Stanley B White and a 1965 White cattle truck driven by J T Davis were involved. State Police and cattle inspectors assisted in cleanup and carcass removal took four hours.
Jerold J. Smith of a Jal ranch announces his candidacy for delegate to the Constitutional Convention in District 4. He has lived in the district since 1936, owns land since 1933, and holds BA and MA degrees with studies in economics business and sociology. Smith is a former athlete, remembers Spanish as his second language, and has worked in drilling, firefighting, coaching, and energy fields before ranching. his wife Sarah Rebecca teaches Spanish in Jal schools and at the College of the Southwest.
Santa Fe AP Seven candidates filed with the secretary of state to seek delegate seats for the August 5 constitutional convention. Among them are Holm C Bursum Jr of Socorro, W C Wheatley of Clayton, Louis S Page of Santa Rosa, Fred H Thompson of Wagon Mound, Claude Leyendecker of Deming, John W Thompson of Lincoln Sierra counties, and John F Bigbee of Encino.
Gov. David F. Cargo told Lexington reporters that federal and state officials would reach agreement on Medicaid by day’s end and a special legislative session could last two to three days. Cargo’s Santa Fe aide denied a flat plan to call a session, noting he would seek legislators’ opinions on a session and funding.
Five candidates filed with the county clerk by noon seeking delegates to the state constitutional convention. Andy Swarthout led filings at 9:30 for District 1, Alex Woodall filed for District 4, with others including H C Pannell for District 1, Mrs Ray D McNeill for District 2, and James Powell for District 3. Powell may face Agnes Head. Swarthout will oppose Pannell. Election is June 17.

Little League mothers will gather at 7 30 p m in the Lovington National Bank community room. All mothers of Little League players are urged to attend this meeting.
Lovington Antenna Company will add two UHF stations to its cable lineup. Channel 28 KSEL Lubbock goes live Monday, followed by Channel 34 once technical issues are resolved. New microwave gear lets the system pull in UHF signals, boosting six VHF channels and a weather-scan report.
