The community walkathon starts at nine tomorrow morning under ideal conditions after a frontal system passes. Tatum notes the event attracts many people and is a chance to do good, with plans to highlight the March of Dimes and local charity efforts.
Washington official figures show New Mexico will receive 18.956 million dollars in federal revenue sharing for the first half of 1973. Rep. Harold Runnels says the sum, up 15 percent from late 1972, will be paid to state and local governments in two equal installments with the first mailed April 6. One third goes to the state government and two thirds to local units. individual allocations to units will be announced April 6. The rise reflects newer population figures and actual 1972 state income tax collections.
Partial clearing and a drop in temperatures tonight. Saturday brings fair skies and warmer readings with Clo 27 to 53, Lovington 32 to 58, Aytesia 34 to 60. In the South Central Valleys expect clear and colder tonight followed by fair conditions and Las Cruces reaching 33 to 62.
Air Force Col James L. Hughes described brutal torture while a prisoner in North Vietnam for six years. He detailed U bolts, handcuffs, beatings, and forced false target data, saying he was starved, drugged, and deprived of medical care during captivity.
Gov. Bruce King signs Bill 1B383 ending ballot crowded primaries. The law requires candidates to file petitions with signatures equal to three percent of total party gubernatorial votes in the previous primary for statewide races, or within the district for district offices. The measure replaces a Senate plan to restore pre primary conventions.
President Nixon announced a nationwide price ceiling on beef pork and lamb effective immediately aimed at slowing food inflation. The measure bans price rises above the 30 day high and requires clear ceiling price displays by April 9.
Gov Bruce King said he would not act on the no fault automobile insurance bill until late next week and would review an opinion from Attorney General David on the measure. He noted the bill is controversial, viewed as two sided, and involves insurance representatives and attorneys.
A E Walkup 57 of 702 West Avenue H died Thursday at Lovington Lea General Hospital after a coronary attack. A Shelly Oil Company retiree, he lived in Lovington 27 years and served as Hillcrest Baptist Church deacon. Survived by wife Mabel, two sons Homer R Roanoke Texas and Ross A Henderson Texas, two daughters Sherry Weaver Joinerville Texas and Ginny Thompson Richardson Texas, two sisters Edith Jones Van Nuys California and Etta Golden Wichita Falls Texas, one brother Orient Walkup Wichita Falls Texas, eight grandchildren. Funeral Saturday at 10 a.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Church. interment Resthaven Cemetery with deacons I M White Lloyd Hubbard Doyle Roberts Ben Gleason Cecil Kirkpatrick Elmer Sumruld as casket bearers.
George R. Fisher 23 of Columbus faced another arson count after officials said he set fire to a mattress in his cell at Franklin County Jail Tuesday. Fifteen inmates were evacuated with no injuries reported.
New Mexico Governor Bruce King vetoed a bill mandating life sentences for drug pushers, drawing criticism from Sen. Wayne Radosevich who says the veto ignores citizen will. Radosevich also notes concerns about a proposed drinking age cut to 19 and potential court challenges.

A spring storm dumped 22 inches of snow on Las Vegas New Mexico isolating the city and stranding hundreds. Roads north of town were closed while Raton Pass and nearby highways also faced closures. Town schools and New Mexico Highlands University canceled classes as motorists sought shelter in gymnasiums and high schools.
More than 1200 Future Homemakers of America members their parents and chapter advisers will convene in Albuquerque this weekend for the annual state convention. The theme is Footsteps in the Sands of Time with open sessions at the downtown Hilton and Popejoy Hall UNM. Dr. Lenton Malry will greet the group as NM House Education Committee chair.
