Hopper W H Graham laments Muhammad Ali’s fame while defending his athletic skill. He tours John Campbell’s 80 acre hog farm, noting modern methods, seasonal hog sales every six weeks, and the shift from traditional chores to managerial farming. He estimates an 80 acre hog and crop operation could yield about $15,000 yearly.
Ray Stephens a Lovington and Lea County radio personality will depart KLEA Radio on April 5 to join KROB Radio in Robstown Texas. He arrived in Lovington January 1 1961 after tech school in Dallas. He had been commercial manager at KLEA since 1962 and helped launch an Abernathy FM venture before returning to Lovington last April.
Caldwell praised Raymond for outstanding Kiwanis service and active support of the Boy Scouts of America and other community activities. The note adds that his cheerful smile and friendly greeting will be missed by ranch hands at KLEA and extends best wishes to his wife Dianne and son Sam.
Tonight near 44 degrees with a mild Thursday. Thursday highs around 80. Lovington reached 70 at 2 pm Tuesday, 36 at 5 am. Nationally excluding Alaska and Hawaii, highs reached 98 in Palm Springs California, and a low of 3 in Greenville Maine.
The Leader corrects a Tuesday report stating Curley Simmons 16 of Levington was not with two passengers when his 1956 Ford crashed Sunday at Eleventh and Tyler. Two injured girls were riding with 19 year old Brodie Lynn Caudle of Hobbs in a 1960 Valiant station wagon who was cited for failure to grant right of way. Simmons was alone.
A meeting for all who want to assist with the Golden Gloves program in Lovington will be held Thursday night at Western Grill's Coffee Room starting at 7 30. The city has over 70 boys in the program with scarce facilities and a group is needed to organize volunteers to work with the boys.
State Personnel Director Harold Bibo reported the New Mexico Welfare Department payroll was submitted late, risking delays to Friday pay. Raises for 406 social staff were retroactively approved after earlier legal issues, with 1,100 employees affected and overtime likely to finalize certification.
Lovington Ford Sales announces sale to Doug Mead and John Ray Bishop, forming Lovington Ford Sales, Inc. Mead brings years of local experience and serves as general manager before the partnership shift, while Bishop becomes service manager. The change follows a month of dealership ownership transitions in Lovington.
Evangelist Keith Wigin ton leads an 11 day revival at First Baptist Church Lovington starting tonight through Easter Sunday with daily 7 pm services and 7 15 pm Sunday start. Morning services 9 30 am Thursday Friday this week and next week. Junior jamboree 6 pm for ages nine to twelve next week and youth fellowship after Monday night service.
Two families were surprised this week as recipients of $10 gift certificates redeemable in merchandise at any participating Lucky Shopper merchant. The page lists prizes and names. Lucky Shopper is sponsored by about 25 Lovington Levi merchants to encourage town shopping. Two or more families or persons will win, announced each Wednesday. Anyone can win there are no blanks to fill out. eligibility requires shopping at home in Lovington.
Physical education students at Taylor Junior High will present a gym demonstration at 7 30 p m Thursday in the school gym. No admission charged and the public is invited. Coach is Jim mie Williams.
