Lovington ministers are invited to gather Monday April 2 at 10 00 a m at First United Methodist Church to elect officers and plan future projects for the Ministerial Alliance.
The Justice Department reported that Albuquerque bucked a national decline in serious crime, rising from 16 540 in 1971 to 17 475 in 1972. Homicide fell while auto theft dropped. forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and larceny all increased.
The 18th annual New Mexico Water Conference with the theme State Water Plan will run April 5-6 at New Mexico State University. Speakers include Warren A. Hall acting director of the Office of Water Resources Research and others from federal and state agencies.
State Revenue Commissioner Fred O Chesky notes about 200 000 New Mexicans have not filed state income tax returns though 144 000 have. The April 16 deadline remains. Refunds show growth with 79 697 checks totaling 4 600 000 issued this year versus 63 000 checks totaling 3 200 000 by this time last year. Only 20 000 of 77 000 eligible for the low income tax credit have filed.
Lovington schools will reduce staff by 12 due to declining enrollment and tight finances, with the elementary level hardest hit by seven cuts. Superintendent Larry Crouse expects remaining staffing to be overstated by about ten per the state formula, and rehiring may pause if resignations occur before fall.
UPI reports that the United States ended its direct military role in Vietnam after 12 years with Gen. Frederick Weyand declaring peace with honor. The departure saw 2,501 Americans leave on 19 aircraft as 2.5 million served ended their long war.
House Banking Committee weighs subpoena for Agriculture Secretary Earl Butz to testify on rising food prices. Patman controls hearing timing while Butz cites prior commitments. Shultz and Dunlop to present admin position. Beime of CWA blasts Phase III as a sham and Congress urged not to broaden Nixon power. Committee may extend authority to April 30, 1974.
In Oxnard California police called Rev C Eugene Rogers awake to claim a car then told him it was found miles away. He checked his drive and found his other car had been stolen as well. The pastor of a Baptist church said he owned a black and yellow Ford and believed the car was taken by a thief.
The Little League Mothers Auxiliary invites all mothers of boys in the program to attend a meeting at Lea County Electric Cooperative room tonight at 7 00 p m.
East Central Plains reports heavy snow warnings today and tonight with accumulations of four inches or more. Windy and colder with occasional snow showers continuing into Friday. Clovis 29 to 50 degrees. Artesia 37 to 50 degrees. Lovington 36 to 47 degrees. North Central Mountains expect heavy snow today and tonight with increasing accumulations and windy conditions. Santa Fe 23 to 40 degrees. Southwestern Valleys see scattered showers or thunderstorms today and tonight with windy, cooler air and lakes wind warnings. Las Cruces 33 to 60 degrees.
Clifton Fletcher Mountain associate professor of surgery UT Southwestern and head of MD Anderson Hospital will arrive in Hobbs this afternoon to address Lea County Medical Society. He is the principal speaker Friday at a public meeting sponsored by the South Lea County unit of the American Cancer Society at First Baptist Church Hobbs. The North Lea unit and public are invited to attend at 7 30 p.m.
The final group of 67 American prisoners of war released from North Vietnam arrived at Clark Air Base Philippines ending U S POWs held in Indochina as Vietnam War ends. Navy Lt Cmdr Alfred H Agnew led the last man to the ramp at Gia Lam Hanoi and Vice President Spiro Agnew addressed a cheering crowd in Manila.
A W Bill Langenegger of Ha German NM says price ceilings on farm products would fail to keep meat affordable and cites DES ban as reducing cattle weight. He notes DES prohibition subtracts about a quarter pound daily per steer, costing the nation over 3.6 million pounds of beef daily.
Ken Schrader, Lovington businessman, remains in intensive care at Bernalillo County Medical Center Albuquerque awaiting fistula repair after gunshot wounds. He has pneumonia and surgery will occur once the complication clears. his son Scott stays by his side as his wife thanks well wishers for their cards. Flowers are not allowed in intensive care.
Gov Bruce King vetoed a measure lowering New Mexico’s drinking age to 19, saying public health and alcohol abuse risks among youth justify the veto. He cited extensive constituent input and opposition to lowering ages, while noting he doubted override prospects. He also rejected a bill mandating life imprisonment for drug pushers, warning of vague language and possible wrongful convictions.
Santa Fe Attorney General David Norvell ruled that the 1973 no-fault auto insurance bill lacks compulsory care and violates equal protection and due process. The opinion, drafted for Rep Turner Branch, says SB220 is invalid in full and reflects constitutional defects despite proposals to amend. Governor Bruce King has until April 6 to act on the legislation.
Lt. Col. Thomas W. Sumpter of Holloman Air Force Base told reporters at Sheppard Air Force Base that the bombings in the Hanoi area late last year were necessary. He described the situation as pretty awful and noted a change in captors' attitudes before his release.
