The United States and Russia held a friendly and businesslike discussion on the Berlin problem Tuesday but failed to present new proposals for a breakthrough. Stewart Hensley reports from Washington for United Press International.
The New Mexico Cattle Growers Association ended its 49th annual convention by reelecting officers and approving several resolutions. Will Orndorff reported grazing lease issues and opposition to a Villa Grande act, while David Pettus warned of increasing cattle numbers and possible drought impacts on production.
Yesterday saw a high of 69 degrees at 2 p.m. and a low of 40 degrees at 4 a.m. The report notes the day's temperature range and peak readings.
About two thousand protesters, mainly British workers, stormed Parliament and clashed with mounted police outside the doors as they cried for jobs and an end to Macmillan's government. For the second consecutive year Mrs. Bina Mae Hall received Tatum Chamber of Commerce’s Citizen of the Year award at the annual banquet. Hall, owner of Hall Insurance Agency, has long served in civic roles and is active as a city council member and chamber board member.
Harold S. Bibo former army officer brewery executive and insurance man was sworn in Tuesday as the new state Personnel Director. He will assume duties April 1 with a salary of 750 dollars a month until July 1 when it rises to 10000 dollars annually. Bibo succeeds Milton E. Scudder who resigned January 18 to enter private business. He has ties to Silver City and San Rafael Valencia County and is a West Point graduate with a Northwestern MBA. He retired from the army in 1959 as a colonel and later worked for Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co.
A Denver man, Arnold Senne, 50, awaits a kidney transplant in Denver General Hospital as time runs out. A 25-year-old Albuquerque airline employee offered his kidney but was sent home after doctors found he had only one functioning kidney, leaving Senne in critical condition.
Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield praised Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara during the government probe into the TFX fighter contract. He defended McNamara’s two years in office as the subcommittee weighs General Dynamics and Boeing bids while admiral and general witnesses prepare testimony.
William S. Driggers of Santa Rosa New Mexico collapsed and died at age 59 while addressing the New Mexico Cattle Growers Association convention in Albuquerque. Physicians could not revive him after 45 minutes of resuscitation. Driggers led the Bar Y Ranch in Guadalupe County and served as NMCGA president from 1958 to 1960. He leaves wife Mary three sons and a daughter.
A 40 foot launching crane punctured the Operation Stargazer balloon delaying the high altitude flight from Holloman AFB. Astronomer William White and Capt. Joseph W. Kittinger Jr. faced uncertain timing as officials weighed repairs and future launch plans after gases and Mylar skin were damaged by a gusty morning incident.
