The annual March of Dimes benefit dance at the Tatum Community building is set for tomorrow night, closing the north Lea County drive. Basil O Connor, National Foundation president, sent a congratulatory telegram honoring Dessie Sawyer of Crossroads for 30 years of leadership.
In New Mexico 1971, a slate of consumer protection bills was introduced. two Norvell backed measures passed both chambers and await the governor. One tightens Unfair Trade Practices language and bans price advertising limits, the other allows writs to prevent offenders from leaving the state or moving assets, with bond posting. House approval came with praise for Charmaine Crown, yet several consumer measures failed, including pyramid schemes ban, class-action rights, and utility rate reforms. Tatum FFA earned multiple top placements at the District Judging Contests held Saturday at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales. Eastern officials indicated dorm occupancy problems and had sought a BEF-backed general fund stopgap.
Lovington city and the Chamber of Commerce, with the University of New Mexico Bureau of Business Research, launch a labor survey March 29 to April 2. Gov Bruce King opened the 16th annual New Mexico Water Conference saying the state’s future hinges on natural resource management especially water He urged more study of desalinization water modification and water imports from Texas and the Pacific Northwest Dr Allen Agnew urged public inclusion in water planning Dr Gerald Thomas warned Americans to confront future water needs noting per capita use rises to 180 gallons daily and national demand could triple by 2020 Rio Grande Compact Commissioner Jesse Gilmer urged careful resource use and warned that overuse could export people rather than water Attendees included Dr William Gorman Ralph Bell Bill Clayson Ira Clark and Col Richard West Burmeister
