Ronnie Gene King infant son of Mr and Mrs Douglas King of Lovington died 11 hours after birth at Lovington Sea General Hospital. Survived by parents grandparents Bowlin Brownfield Texas King and one sister Brenda Kay. Funeral services held at Smith Rogers chapel with Rev Don Brent and burial at Brownfield under Smith Rogers direction.
Cashway's 17 West Avenue H outlet in Lovington known as No 9 is sold to Glenn Barber who will convert it to Farmers Market under a discount grocery model. Bar ber says the change will rebrand the store with volume items, discontinue trading stamps, and reopen Friday after a brief remodel period.
A District Court jury could not decide if James E. Dowell was totally permanently disabled under a Prudential Insurance policy. The 12 jurors were split 9 to 3, failing to reach the required 10 to 2 vote, prompting Judge Kermit Nash to declare a mistrial after two days of testimony. Dowell previously worked for Tidewater Oil in Hobbs and had a 50 percent Workmen’s Compensation disability. Jurors listed include Cecil Lee and John Cunningham.
Twenty Air Force officers and enlisted personnel at Cannon Air Force Base will receive decorations for Viet Nam service. Captain Richard Goudy will be posthumously awarded the Silver Star for his actions after his plane was shot down on August 9 1965. He escaped the crash but was killed by Viet Cong during a firefight.
Major General John P. Jolly announced the 1966 67 Selective Service Qualification Test dates May 14 May 21 and June 3 1966. Applications must postmark by April 23 1966. Deferment to student status may include non academic courses and testing centers are listed across New Mexico with guidance to obtain and mail the form promptly.
Federal officials report Willie R. Brewer 22 surrendered after learning he was wanted for the January 12 burglary of the First Federal Savings and Loan in Lea County. Brewer and Doyle McKee 22 of Hobbs were indicted in Albuquerque. McKee was arrested by the FBI. About $2000 was stolen. Brewer remained in Lea County Jail in Lovington in custody of the U.S. Marshal on a $5000 bond.
SANTA FE (UP) A Belen beautification program would employ welfare clients in public works if approved by the Office of Economic Opportunity. It would likely use disabled or elderly workers. New Mexico has $3.5 million earmarked under Title V to train welfare clients through public works and education projects. Many clients already work as teacher aides statewide.
The House Appropriations Committee advanced a $2.5 billion funding bill to cover federal functions through June 30 and start two Great Society programs. Lawmakers voiced frustration over rising welfare costs while limiting funds for Teacher Corps and rent subsidies, offset by a $41 million boost to school aid and modest Medicare provisions.
A two car collision Thursday afternoon caused about 650 dollars in damage to the 1965 Oldsmobile of Theodore Jennings of 12704 Turquoise NE Albuquerque NM. He struck a parked 1960 Dodge owned by Jack Jackson of 302 North 3rd. Jennings and a passenger were slightly injured and treated at Lea General Hospital. another passenger was uninjured.
FBI agents captured Jack Daniel Sayadoff 30, a listed ten most wanted fugitive, at a shopping center. He faced charges including kidnapping and bank robbery. accomplice Patsy Ann Janakos 30 also arraigned. The pair allegedly abducted an elderly babysitter in Newark California and left her bound with Janakos’ 3 year old daughter in custody of her father amid divorce proceedings.
John Edgar May, 74, died Thursday afternoon at 4 30 in Plains. A former Stamford Texas resident and restaurant owner, he had lived in Lovington since December 30. Funeral plans are with Smith Rogers in Lovington. Survived by widow Fannie Noviola and three children, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Also surviving son Bill May of Clovis and son Cotton May of Lovington and daughter Mrs Jim Pappan of Albuquerque. Brother James May of Newellton LA. He was a patient at Plains Memorial Convalescent Hospital. Casket bearers named Merle Kindel Eldon Weary Kenneth Gaskell Jack McCaw Otis Kitchens Rudy Owen.
El Paso Natural Gas Company will apply to the Federal Power Commission for authority to construct and operate $8.5 million in pipeline facilities to handle about 900 billion cubic feet of new reserves from the Val Verde Basin West Texas. The gas, bought from Shell Oil, will supply daily deliveries up to 150 million cubic feet and support future reserves up to three trillion cubic feet.
UPI reports Mao Zedong, China's supreme leader, gravely ill with unconfirmed reports stating he has not appeared in public or at government functions for some time. The reports circulated from Peking amid uncertainty over his condition.
The annual School Arts Festival sponsored by the American Association of University Women will be held March 26 and 27 at Yarbro Elementary School. Showings run 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 2:30 to 4 p.m. on Sunday to accommodate parents and guests.
