Officials report about 410000 Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week, down roughly 30000 from the prior week, with new claims about 200000 higher than a year earlier. The counts for those drawing benefits also fell 7600 as seasonal factors influence March trends.
United Press reports a left wing Indonesian paper accuses Secretary of State Dulles of arranging arms shipments to Sumatra rebels. The paper claims Dulles met rebel leaders on Formosa and promised more U.S. aid if arms were supplied. Dulles allegedly spoke with rebel and government forces during a trip from the SEATO conference in Manila.

Lebanese reports say Egypt and Syria blocked a Russian move to enter Middle East commercial aviation. The two nations merged Egyptian National Airlines and Syrian Arab Airlines to reject a Russian bid for one third of the venture and to use American equipment instead. Russia sought to place its planes in Cairo Damascus and Prague but faced airspace refusals across the region.

Wednesday brings Cecil L LaGrone Jr vs Lea Casing Crew and Carl Simmons vs Jeffries Eaves Inc compensation cases. Thursday includes Leo Moore vs United Carbon Co compensation. Lovington police investigated thefts of hubcaps wheels and tires with losses described by two residents. Rob Adams reported three cans stolen from his 1957 Oldsmobile parked at home. Vivian Travers Davis aged 48 died after being stricken on the job Friday afternoon while drilling for Olson Drilling Co in the Jar area. A 19 year old Carlsbad youth named Sammy Olguin was convicted of possessing narcotics and conspiracy to handle narcotics. He and three companions were arrested in a one room shack where a large quantity of narcotics and stolen items were found. Eliseo Chavarria, Olguin’s uncle, pled guilty to felony counts and received five years. The other two men, Jackie Martin and Joe Guerra, were released for lack of evidence.
An armed robbery occurred near the Ince Service Station on the Carlsbad Highway at about 9 51 PM Friday. A youth about 17 produced a .22 rifle, demanded cash, and fled in a two tone 1953 Ford. Alvin C Apple 17 Hobbs was later captured near the state line driving a red and white 1954 Mercury reported stolen from the Elks Lodge.
Pleas of guilty were entered yesterday at preliminary hearings in a Lovington case involving armed robbery at a Hill truck line. Ponta Novel Bouldin and Glen Nash admitted participating in the $4 hold up with a juvenile lookout.

In Butte Montana a mining superintendent Steve Hurley and two supervisors Joe Shugert and Earnest Brisbin died from dead air as they explored a closed copper mine. Brisbin aged 50 was found slumped at the 3400 foot level. The Anaconda Company organized a large search and rescue effort.
A $200,000 damage suit was filed in District Court over a Hobbs highway accident dated January 3 that killed two Hobbs residents. Careen Nixon Cook, administrator of Eva Belle Cook’s estate, names Edgar Teeter and J. W. Jones Construction Co. as defendants. The petition seeks $100,000 plus costs for each death and a jury trial, with Neal and Neal of Hobbs as plaintiffs’ attorneys.
