Mayor Pinky Jones praised about 15 Lovington youths who met with the city commission and the architect to discuss plans for a new youth center. The Youth Center Advisory Board drove the discussion, offering practical ideas and signaling strong community involvement in shaping the project.
United States protests to the Soviet Union over not releasing three American airmen in East Germany and visits ailing Lt. Welch. In Saigon communists shell areas as Maj. Gen. Nguyen Khanh calls for mobilization. In Mexico City authorities tighten safety after alerts of a French assassination plot involving de Gaulle. In Laos Maj. Praseuth, intelligence chief, is killed by an assassin, raising fears of right wing reprisals. Cyprus tension widens with Materios and UN chief Thant observing.
Saigon strongman Maj. Gen. Nguyen Khanh pledged to mobilize the public against Viet Cong guerrillas and to shoot or imprison slackers. He announced a new diplomatic offensive with Cambodia and Laos to patch tensions and restore full relations, including an ambassador from North Vietnam and talks in Phnom Penh.
Secretary of State Alberta Miller released a tentative list of May 5 primary candidates with many names across U S Senate governorship and district posts. Filing deadlines have passed and some nominees may withdraw before the vote.
In Mexico City police heightened security around French President Charles de Gaulle after reports that Louis Honorat de Conde, a 25 year old Paris student involved in a 1962 assassination attempt, may be in the country. Officials searched several people and warned of a poison dart camera device while de Gaulle continued his schedule under close protection.
Abbott and Oliver, Inc. prepare a formal opening this Saturday on the south side of the square. The merger of Oliver Service Center and Lovington Appliance invites the public to visit the remodelled store with coffee and doughnuts. Owners Jimmy Abbott and Herb Oliver note long local histories in appliance service and repair.
Dr. Jack Redman Republican candidate for U S House Position 2 will be principal speaker at a 7 p.m. Hobbs High School Cafeteria dinner honoring Mike Sims, a Republican candidate for U S House Position 1, who will oppose Thomas Morris in the fall. The $5 plate fund raiser kicks off Sims campaign with Lea County and state Republicans expected. Sims was the lone candidate on the ballot after Merrill Norton withdrew and pledged support to Sims. Other candidates including Joe Leonard and B Lyman are expected to attend the event.
UPI report from Berlin notes Soviet refusal to free three downed American airmen held in East Germany after an RB66 mission. An American surgeon visited Magdeburg hospital but was blocked from treating or questioning the captive officer. We urged Moscow to release the men, who face espionage charges. the visit lasted 90 minutes with Russian officials present.
The Lovington Republican Women plan a Friday meeting at 701 W. Ave, H. starting at 9:80 a.m. Mrs. Herb Oliver invites attendance and notes a program. Guests include Mrs. Harry Bliss, state president of the New Mexico Federation of Republican Women, and Mrs. B. Lyman.
Dallas based lawyer Melyvin Belli, defending Jack Ruby, said he might face ABA censure after Ruby's death sentence outbursts. He compared possible ABA sanctions to being banned from professional circles.
The Lovington Public Library will be open to serve the public on a revised weekly schedule. Monday hours are 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday are 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Special morning hours are 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on select days.
Defense Secretary McNamara endorses the war on poverty as a solution for youths rejected by the armed forces and employers. He cites needs for work camps and job training, saying poverty fuels low graduation rates and medical issues. Celebrezze estimates a 962 million program saves taxpayers and boosts future output.
