Local Jaycees vote to aid the Lions club with the softball park this summer. They will defray half the cost of vandalism damage since last season and provide use of the park for the Little League. Erwin cites about 1000 dollars needed to restore the park, including 280 for amplifier repair and 4 dollar bulbs.
C F East says he did not plead guilty to abusive language charges, paid a $15 fine to avoid jail, and plans to contest a damage suit. Betty and J F Batten sued Mr and Mrs East in district court, with East denying the petition's allegations.
Governor Mechem announces an emergency traffic safety meeting at Highland High School Field House in Albuquerque on March 20 at 10 30. C O Erwin says invitations go to interested safety workers but the public is urged to attend. Mechem and State Police Chief Joe Roach will outline immediate steps to curb rising crashes and a longer term plan.
Mrs. Bell succeeds Mrs. Kenneth Sadie as secretary for the First church. Sadie had taken over from Mrs. C. F. Le Beau who resigned.
Miss Charlotte Heinzelman leads Lea County 4-H Club models in an around the clock style show held March 16 in the Lea County Cooperative Building. Girls from Lovington and nearby towns showcased outfits from pajamas to formals, with a green clock centerpiece and narration by Mrs. Buddy Hayter.
The Lovington Press claims a front page misstatement about the Leader’s ownership under new management. It asserts David Watson had no stake or lien, Denies moving the paper to Hobbs, and notes the transfer papers list Felter and Hunt to Agnes Kastner Head with no Watson involvement.

Robert Dow failed to qualify to run for district judge as he did not meet six month voter registration rule. Secretary of State Beat rice Roachy ordered Dow’s name removed from ballots after the discrepancy was found by unnamed district lawyers. Dow, longtime New Mexico resident and former attorney general, has moved from Wichita to New Mexico and is a partner in Dow and Love.
John Shea was elected president of the Lea County Traffic Safety Council at a regular meeting. Mary Payne of Lovington was elected director along with F. H. Tutt, Claude Crosley Mallamar, Merle Absher, Kenneth Towle Eunice, C D Scott and Floy Winn Jal. The next meeting is at Mallamar Recreation Hall on April 19.
The district court granted several divorces including Agnes Braziel versus Billy Braziel with custody to the mother and $150 monthly support. Eloise Powers versus William Powers restores McLemore maiden name. Several civil compensation awards were ordered: H R Davis vs U S Potash Co $750. Dee Haley vs C P Construction Co $1,400. De ward Hext vs E F Moran Drilling Co $1,300. J B Parks vs Noble Drilling Co $2,000. W C Haywood vs Arrow Mutual Co $4,000. James R Deal vs Ralph Lowe $2,500. R R Wilkerson vs Skousen Construction Co $2,000.
Primary registration ends April 5 with home precinct options. In Tatum voters may sign up at Fox Real Estate Office. In Hobbs locations include Tidwell Motor Co City Hall Cowan and Schubert 115 East Dunham Jeffries Eaves Inc and Justice of Peace Tom Finn. Eunice Bowden Insurance Agency Jal Leavell Insurance Agency and City Hall also handle registration.
L. D. Patman and Coy Fisher will assist in cotton and fertilizer tests on their farms. One more farmer is sought to join J. T. Easley E. C. Lackey and R. L. Davis, with plots of 6 to 10 acres and seven varieties tested with nitrogen phosphate mixes.
A Leader's Training School will be held in the basement of the court house on March 24 from 9 30 a m to 3 00 p m Two members from each extension club in the county will attend and present information to their clubs The April theme is Business Centers in the Home led by Mrs Dorothy Hanny Home Management Specialist with the Extension Service State College.
Loyd Hawkins of Tucumcari outlined plans for a new Hobbs radio station to be opened this summer. Hobbs architect George Graves prepared the specifications. The site is near the Lovington highway at the Hobbs city limits. Hawkins, a Tucumcari station owner, plans to move to Hobbs once construction progresses.
Jerry Goff of Lovington sustained a fractured right hip in a two car crash on the Lovington highway five miles south at 8 15 Tuesday night. H J McGee of Hobbs received a minor right shoulder fracture. Police reported chemical slickness from a leaking oil field truck caused the road to be slick.
Los Angeles reports a new enamel advertised as harmless and odorless for nursery use. The maker says it is non toxic and suitable for refinishing cribs toys and playpens in traditional nursery shades pink blue white and pale green.
Bond posted for Bobby Doyal frees him from Lea County jail as funders from Eddy County pledge twenty seven thousand one hundred forty dollars. Doyal, awaiting March 29 trial for two counts of murder, is represented by Robert W. Ward. Banquet tickets are on sale at local outlets for the March 26 event with about 400 expected to attend.
The Hobbs School Board loses another round in the Valley tenure case. The court ruled the Santa Fe writ of certiorari was improper. Eloise Valley, fired teacher at the Hobbs Colored School, had tenure and had been ordered to renew her contract by the State School Board.
Summary of municipal court fines and charges listing individuals such as Carney E Baker James E Cross and Pedro Lavaro for drunken driving speeding and blocking driveways. Fines range from 2 to 100 with licenses revoked for one year in the DWI case and bonds forfeited for several speeding and obstruction offenses. Farm Home association head Drayton Wasson will attend a Clovis meeting Thursday at 10 30 to discuss a special emergency loan. He cited a telegram from acting state director D L Beal. A United Press dispatch notes federal funds for wind erosion areas including eastern New Mexico.
The Lovington Business and Professional Women's Club will meet on March 18 in the Lea Room for its regular monthly gathering. The meeting will cover club business and upcoming community projects.
Mrs Grace Beauchamp works temporarily in the county clerk's office assisting with preparing voters lists. She is noted as a former county clerk.
About 12 farmers attended a courthouse meeting Tuesday as County Agent Perkins reported 400 additional acres signed, bringing the total to nearly 1,000. He aims to contact more landowners next week to reach 2,500 acres needed for harvest. Attendees include Bob Boyd J O Rayes Bud Walker S A Rieland Bob Rieland J C Steagall Thomas Swing M D Brion and son and the Peyton Bros.
Lea County Electric Cooperative weighs expansion after protests to the National REA over further loans. Hobbs based New Mexico Electric Co and Amarillo Southwestern Electric Co push their power offers to Administrator Ancher Nelson, who arrived from Washington for the hearing. The cooperative serves Lovington Higginbotham and Plains Texas, with plans to enlarge the plant and meet demand.
Henry Gentry and Billy Marlar pay fines for speeding and reckless driving. Fines listed include 15 dollars for several drivers, 10 dollars for failure to yield, and 105 dollars for reckless driving. Other items reference hot checks, mortgage removal, false pretenses, directory sales, and dismissed case upon payment.
Police arrested J. B. Luttrell near Lovington on Tuesday evening when a road block warned motorists of slick roads from a chemical leak. Luttrell refused to obey and was fined $100, unable to pay, and jailed.
