Lovington police hold eight youngsters linked to a string of burglaries and vandalism over three months. Authorities say the youths were dared by peers to commit thefts at locations including Scotty's Bar Cotton Butane G W Wallace Service Station and Love's Boot Shop. Police chief Robinson cites troubled homes and late night roaming as factors in the spree.
Eunice resident R. C. Hayes announces his Democratic bid for Sheriff of Lea County in the May 13 1958 primary. He cites fourteen years in law enforcement including Dallas County and Lea County posts and service aboard the USS Tennessee during Pearl Harbor.
Swiphens Roberts of Magnolia Petroleum Corp. died after a head-on crash at 1 p.m. in Wilfield Louisiana. Internal injuries caused his death an hour later. Interment set for March 19 in Kilgore Texas. He was brother to Jesse Roberts of 918 East Cain Hobbs.
The Lovington schools science fair drew almost 600 registrants for about 300 entries from all age groups. Ty Minton won top honors for his project on the effects of radioactive phosphorus on mice, judged Superior. Wayne Coe Joe Freeman and C L Singleton followed closely with excellent scores, with lower grades presenting group and individual projects.
Delegates from Hobbs Los Alamos Albuquerque Santa Fe Los Lunas Clovis Eunice Artesia Tatum Lovington Roswell gather at Lovington High School for a convention session. Speakers include C E Jackson Beatrice Kingsley H C Parnell and Dr H Basheim with discussions on home school cooperation local special education programs and legislation. Local leaders Marion Benham and Mrs Jacques Dailey chair the Lovington unit, which is one of four in the state.
Dr. Lyman C. Duryea, new district health officer based in Roswell, plans community health advisory councils in Eddy Lea and Chaves counties. First council boards will be in Jal Eunice Hobbs Lovington and Tatum. Officials say no news releases until Duryea signs them. he has yet to appear at the Leader.
A man with a loaded .45 auto, a ignition jumper, and a stolen car was arrested in Portales on March 9. He gave the name Kenneth Dunn, 24, of Lovington, though records listed Wichita Falls Texas. Dunn pled guilty to carrying a concealed weapon in Portales court and was turned over to Clovis police on the car theft charge.
Voters in Lovington and Hobbs will determine a 1.2 million dollar bond plan to fund a new junior high school, additions to senior high, and new furniture and equipment. Polls open 8 am to 6 pm with a 950 thousand dollar Lovington school bond for additions and equipment.
The Hobbs Eagles won their third straight New Mexico state basketball title with a 76-75 victory over the Santa Fe Demons on Saturday night. Coach Ralph Tasker, in his fourth crown, led Lovington in 1949 and now stars for Hobbs who rose from a 179 record to tourney peak with fast breaking play and tight defense.
John Charles Alexander 62 of 409 South 4 Street died of a heart attack Monday afternoon while working at a rig in Eddy County near Loco Hills. He was born in Oklahoma in February 1894 and is survived by his wife a step daughter Joy Campbell a son John Charles Jr believed in Germany two brothers Kermit Tulsa and Tom Tucumcari and a sister Mrs Ethel Barnes Stillwater. Funeral services are at Smith Yarbro Chapel at 2 p m Wednesday with Rev Oral Butler. The body will be shipped to Ranger Texas for burial.
Snow depth reached five inches at Crossroads as sheriff’s deputies reported Tuesday morning. The event followed a Monday night fall between dark and daylight with Lovington noting drizzling rain cold winds and a low of 32. Light sleet and freezing rain occurred before dawn.
The Knowles Community Center was dedicated Friday night to honor the late S M Reiland who enabled its creation. The event, part of National 4-H Week, featured remarks by Loyd Sevier Donna Seiver Bobby Bradshaw Bill Bradshaw and James Gilstrap and announced a cotton meeting at the Knowles Center on March 20.
City patrolman J W Jolly Jr spotted a green arc on a 12 000 volt line near the city limits and notified authorities. He awaited electric workers who said the jumper wire short could have caused serious injury or death to anyone along Avenue D and near a dirt road.
Mrs Floyd Lee national committeewoman and Mrs John Kruger state vice chairman attend the 6th annual GOP Women’s conference in Washington. The group lunched with President Eisenhower and on Sunday attended a reception for Vice President Nixon and cabinet members.
