A 16 year old Roswell junior won the district oratorical contest by two points over Lovington student Brian Gratton who attends St Peters High School in Roswell Gratton scored 264 to 262 for Lovington High School senior Mike South Gratton advances to the bi district round competing against an Alamogordo senior for state entry Other district participants were Janie Lucas Artesia and Jimmy Vandenberg Carlsbad Judges were Ray Potter Mrs F nis Heidel and Donald Brent.

USSR Spy Planes Chased by U S Jets Over Alaska
Two Soviet reconnaissance planes penetrated 30 miles into U S air space over Alaska on Friday and were intercepted by U S F102 jets.
