First Great Plains Contract Signed By Marvin McClish
Lea County farmer Marvin McClish signed a Department of Agriculture agreement to retire 22 acres from cultivation and plant grasslands. The nonproductive plots will be squared off through surveys and reseeded for native grasses and protective purposes. The contract also covers ditching for irrigated lands and McClish will oversee related work. The McClish family has long been residents of the McDonald area. Mrs. McClish is active in 4H and community affairs. Marvin serves as president of the Lea County Farm Loan Association.

Penitentiary Population Reaches New High
The state penitentiary’s population rose to a record 952 on Wednesday, up 172 from a year ago, Warden T M Woodruff reported. The State Parole Board granted nine paroles, considered two advisements, and denied 24. One of the denials was Luis Campos, serving 60 years for murder of rancher Pierre Nalda in 1950. Lea Countians granted paroles include Richard Hatchcraft, J D Adams, and Juan D Delago for auto theft and bogus checks.
