Floyd Maples of Springfield Missouri was returned to Deming after a 48 hour foray into Mexico and back. He faces unspecified charges while the district attorney's office reviews the case. Sheriff Claude Irwin arranged the return from a ranch 20 miles west of Columbus New Mexico. Authorities are seeking a second man who held a ranch hand at gunpoint near Columbus for over eight hours and stole a horse and saddle before crossing into Mexico.
Maj Marion Dunn a 51 year old Salvation Army officer stopped two payroll robbers by blocking their escape on her bicycle in London. She shouted warnings and a group of children formed a human barrier while a truck driver aided police by grabbing one suspect. Dunn later expressed regret but urged discipline for youth.
Julia Ann Hager, sixth grader at Lea Elementary in Lovington, wins first in New Mexico for DAR annual essay contest. Her essay argues that "System in all things should be aimed at, for in execution it renders everything more easy" and applies Washingtons advice to life, government, and education.
Administration officials told congressional staff that Hanoi could raise Communist strength in South Vietnam by about 50 percent during 1966. That would require a substantial further rise in U S troops, already at 216 000 to 217 000 with 20 000 more en route. No specific future increase amount was given.
Gov. Jack M. Campbell defended awarding tens of thousands in furnishings contracts for the Legislative Building and State Library, saying Patton bid lowest. Opponent David Cargo plans to seek an injunction claiming a constitutional ban on legislators bidding on state contracts. Campbell cited audit concerns over bid splitting and criticized Campaign tactics during a political year in New Mexico.
Democratic figures Bruce King and Roy Walker endorsed T. E. Gene Lusk of Carlsbad to counter former Gov John Burroughs in the May 3 primary. Lusk led with 58 percent of delegates from the Feb 2 nominating convention as King and Walker agreed to serve as statewide campaign co chairmen. King said he had advised bulk purchasing and would seek agency cooperation to lower prices while weighing future plans after leaving office.
Senator Thomas J. Dodd announces a drive next week to move federal controls on interstate gun sales. He plans a meeting of the Senate juvenile delinquency subcommittee to seek clearance for the measure backed by President Johnson. Dodd accuses the NRA of deceiving the public and says Congress must pass the legislation to keep deadly weapons from those who should not have them.

J F McAdams of Hobbs was featured as after dinner speaker at the Jaycee installation banquet held Thursday night. He praised Jaycees for community work and urged focus on happiness as a journey built through giving and living as a personal Bible to others.
