A Lovington Chamber of Commerce membership drive shows signs of success on day one with many new members signed and existing members more engaged. Leaders credit the shift to a message of what members can do for the chamber, not just what the chamber can do for them.
Albert C. Persons, editor of the Birmingham Weekly Examiner, says he was recruited for the 1961 Cuban invasion and believes it might have succeeded if Castro had not mobilized troops after the initial assault. He cites U S government involvement as limited to support rather than direct control.
Donna Gail Moran of Lovington will travel to Mobile Alabama Saturday to compete in America's Junior Miss pageant for 1963. She won New Mexico’s Junior Miss title sponsored by the Lovington Jaycees and will vie with contestants from all 50 states for a $14,000 scholarship pool and a summer tour with Coca Cola Bobbie Brooks and Eastman Kodak.
Funeral services for William P Graham 60, father of Gene Graham manager of Gene's Saveway, will be held at 2 30 afternoon at Rix Funeral Chapel Odessa Texas. Burial in Odessa. He died Tuesday night. Survived by two sons Gene of Lovington and Charles of Hobbs, three daughters Mrs N W Cooper Odessa Mrs L Norris Jr and Mrs L D Mc New of Seminole and 15 grandchildren.
Building permits issued in Lovington for February totalled 41425 for new construction. January's 58590 adds to the year’s 100015. Previous month’s items include Barroc Company 22,000 and J E Haseloff 9,000 among others.
The New Mexico House approved Lt. Gov. Mack Easley’s revenue bond bill to develop recreational areas. A five member authority would back bonds issued by an out of state company to fund dams highways and motels leased to operators. The bill passed 38 14 and moves to Senate with amendments.
Firefighters from Lovington and Mallamar battled a Thursday blaze at the ranch home of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Tulk about 3:30 p.m. The brick house suffered roof destruction and a wall collapse, but most furniture and exterior walls survived. No damage estimate or cause given.
A fire of undetermined origin ripped through the 150 foot Gladiola Western Bar and Grill in Gladiola early Thursday, causing about $100,000 in damage. Tatum and Lovington fire crews fought the flames for about five hours with limited water. Glen Farmer, Artesia, owner, estimates the loss insured.
Tonight at 7 30 in Pannell Auditorium Lovington High School presents On With The Show a circus musical about confidence men pursued by a sheriff. Tickets available at the door. Directors are Robert Boddy Bil Chandler and J D Fry with performance by band drama and wear departments.
The Lovington area shows clear to partly cloudy skies with warmer temperatures through Friday night. Highs reach 67 degrees on Friday and lows fall to 38 degrees overnight.
Funeral services are set for 2:30 p.m. today at Smith Yarbro Funeral Home for Edgar Lee Rogers 61 a longtime Lovington resident who died Wednesday at his home 321 W Ave H. Burial will be in Lovington Cemetery. Rogers born August 1 1912 in Bo vina Texas is survived by daughter Kay Washburn of San Diego four brothers and three sisters.
Johnny Cash, a leading country and western entertainer, is slated to appear March 19 at Parnell Auditorium Lovington. The Lovington Lions Club sponsors the fundraiser with advance tickets at $1.75 adults and 75 cents students, $2.25 and $1 at the door. The Tennessee Three Marshall Grant Luther Perkins W S Holland perform with Gordon Terry and June Carter. Time to be announced depending on whether one or two shows are held.
