In Santa Fe the Senate opened a fight over school finances as a 19 page Legislative School Study Committee analysis of Senate Bill 1 criticized the base distribution formula for shortchanging local resources and failing to equalize funds. The memo notes SB1 threatens local control and omits an alternative plan SB191.
Lovington reports strong gusty winds blowing dust today with colder temperatures and intermittent snow possible through Saturday morning. Highs around 44 and lows near 26. New Mexico wide scattered snow showers with gusty winds, blowing dust in lower elevations, and partial clearing by Saturday. mountain and northeast plains see lingering snow flurries tonight.
In Santa Fe the House defeats a bill to provide state support for non public education by a 41 28 vote. Rep Mondragon argues for a hearing but the measure dies. The House also rejects a bill to double the severance tax on uranium copper coal and timber following an unfavorable report.
In New Mexico the truck train length bill advances after a near unanimous committee voice vote. It would raise trailer length to 105 feet on selected highways while maintaining 65 feet for the current limit and allowing three trailers. Support cites lower costs from roomier, lightweight cargo. Opponents call it special interest legislation and worry routing onto four lane roads.
President Dwight D. Eisenhower shows favorable progress after recent illness. General Frederic J. Hues reports at Walter Reed Army Hospital that he is expected to leave bed and sit in a chair within a few days with good morale and spirits.
Gov. David Cargo asks the Senate Finance Committee to approve a $3.3 million severance tax bond to acquire Eagle Nest Lake area for a state park. House panel supports a separate $2.1 million bond plan to open five new parks and upgrade others, with discussions of land swaps and lease concerns surrounding Eagle Nest Lake property.
President Nixon awarded the Medal of Honor in a East Room ceremony to Sgt. J C Fred Zabitosky S Sgt Joe Hooper and Spec 5 Clarence E Sasser all under 30 for heroism under fire in Vietnam. Resor read citations noting outstanding bravery in January and February 1968.
A district court jury acquitted Billy Ray White on two counts of murder for the gunshot deaths of H. N. Rice and Blanche Brown at Budville Trading Post on November 18, 1967. White, 26, declared justice done after the verdict. he remained jailed on unrelated robbery warrants from Albuquerque and Louisiana.
