The USS Skate, an atomic submarine, docked in Portland after a trans Atlantic voyage largely undersea. It demonstrated self sufficiency with months submerged without oxygen and depth capabilities beyond conventional subs.
The farm bloc presses for a policy revamp as Senate votes 12 to 2 to freeze price supports and acreage at 1957 levels. A House subcommittee also backs a dairy and acreage freeze, with bipartisan backing and swift floor action planned after Senate action. Senator Elendar says the long range bill remains to be drafted as a stopgap.
Long Beach Calif former crew members of USS New Mexico will hold a May reunion promoted by D J Cady. The event is set for May 31 at COP Cub Terminal Island Long Beach with veterans from all 48 states. The New Mexico flagships dimensions and specs are given and its commissioning date noted.
An 18 year old Dora High School senior Louise Smith of Portales earned the New Mexico homemaker scholarship with the highest state rating on a home making exam taken by 1670 seniors in 62 schools. She receives 1500 dollars from General Mills and will compete for the National Homemaker title in April. Judith Stratton of Portales High School placed second and earned 500 dollars.
The First Baptist Church GA group met Monday at 4:00 pm with five members present. The session opened with hymn O Zion Haste played by Yvett Miller. Carolyn Shields called the meeting to order as Mrs Ed Runnels led an open discussion on Faith Through Love and led a missionary prayer calendar closing prayer. Members present were Linda Plummer Kay Petersen Mary Alice Denman Carolyn Shields and Yvett Miller.
Georgia Lusk state education officials unveil a teen safe drive program. The plan reorganizes the teen age safety association and tasks the education department with leading efforts. An initial project inventories accidents involving teen drivers.
Mrs. Selman III J B Selman has been ill this week according to local society notes.
Magnolia Petroleum announces another deep well No 2 Heffiefinger in Sec 18 8s 34e Roosevelt County southeast of Sec 18's No 1 Heffiefinger and northeast of No 3 Jacobs Federal nearest producer. Laréo Oil begins a deep well in Sec 14 two miles west. Central Leduc drills nine miles south of Kenna after gas and oil in drillstem tests. Tests show oil gas signs and varying muds. further logging and possible acidizing planned near Lone Wolf station Railroad Mountain area.
Charles Dean Beavers, son of Mr and Mrs R D Beavers, was taken to Sea General Hospital Tuesday. He is seriously ill with tonsillitis and croup and has been under oxygen.
Brookie Lee Anderson and Big Sister of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority will be home from Terx as Tech this weekend.
Sir Jim McDonald announces that starting March 1 Lea County enlistees and inductees will go to Fort Ord California for basic training. Fort Ord lies on the Pacific near Monterey with beaches and recreational clubs. Contact Sgt McDonald at the Selective Service Board in the Court House for enlistment details.
Jack L. King announces 1958 applications for the free cotton classing and market news service. Carlsbad office serves Chaves DeBaca Eddy Lea Quay Roosevelt counties in New Mexico and Pecos Reeves Ward in Texas. Farmers join Smith Doxey groups to qualify. 5 809 New Mexico farmers were in cotton improvement last year. Applications from ginners county agents CSS offices Carlsbad office 105 North Canal Street due by August 1 1958.
The Highway Department announced 48 violations of state truck laws in January. Citations covered overwidth overlength over weight and evading ports of entry, with four cases in Lea County. Names and violations include E F Butler Jal overlength 18 ft Jan 15 on NM-18 near Jal, Co S Feigham Tatum no permit Jan 22, Western Oil Transportation Hobbs 38 ft over length Jan 23 on NM-18 near Lovington, W M Walker Hobbs 9 ft over length Jan 21 on NM-18 near Hobbs.
The State's Traffic Safety Administrator fines the attorney Harry O Morris of Albuquerque and Clifford E Davis for advising his client to drive while Davis' license is suspended. C L Mears said Morris claimed the suspension was unjust while Davis appeals a DUI conviction. Mears asserts state law keeps the suspension in effect during appeal and will be enforced.
State Police Chief Joe Roach announced a push to increase road blocks to catch drivers with suspended or revoked licenses. C L Mears estimated 20 000 drivers in New Mexico are operating without valid licenses and 10 000 have none at all. Roach said the plan includes enforcing a mandatory jail sentence for violations.
A National Labor Relations Board examiner in San Francisco recommends that Roswell's F. M. Reeves & Sons Co be ordered to bargain with Local 492 Teamsters Union. The ruling cites unfair labor practice and interference with employees' rights to organize. The order would reinstate strikers and terminate replacements since the September strike, with Reeves supplying materials to contractors at Walker Air Force Base in Roswell.
Santa Fe Railway officials report the fastest freight train service in U S history cutting Chicago to Los Angeles time from 101 to 77 hours. Ernest S Marsh says the 103 car train pulled by four diesel units with 6000 horsepower set the record on a Chicago to Richmond California test run and the new schedule begins March 12.
Malco Refineries spokesman says a Roswell refinery breakdown will nearly halt all purchasing for 15 days, affecting operations and supply.
Sen. O Mahoney and Sen. Carroll press for immediate start on the Flaming Gorge unit of the Upper Colorado River Project with fast prime contract awards and supplemental appropriations to accelerate nearby units. They argue a crash program could save costs via earlier bids. Secretary Dulles departs for SEATO in Manila and will discuss Summit Conference strategy with allied foreign ministers.
The Navy plans to launch a Vanguard rocket carrying a six inch test satellite when weather permits at Cape Canaveral. Rain and showers may hinder tracking as technicians note the slender rocket rising from the pad. The tests aim to validate equipment for a full sized moon mission later this month. The Army reports a third Explorer is in development and confirms the second Explorer launched Wednesday failed to reach orbit.

Jimmy LeBeau son of Mr and Mrs C T LeBeau of Lovington was chosen as one of 75 to attend a retreat at Cloudcroft this weekend. Sponsored by the Board of Students Organizations at Texas Tech College Lubbock the gathering will study school administration and student problems. Tech President E N Jones and Dean of Student Life and wives will accompany. Speakers include Dr Jones and Dean Halland of the University of Texas. They depart Lubbock Friday at 9 am and return Sunday at 9 pm.
A Lynchburg Virginia student wrote the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce asking for pamphlets world maps horses photos and various Native American artifacts including war bonnet wampum belt turtle rattler quiver bow case peace pipe moccasins blanket necklaces weapons totem pole and tepee all free. The chamber sent pamphlets and photos with a note that the rest would have to be obtained independently.
Lt. Ronald Martin expressed uncertainty over which side fired on a U.S. Air Force plane near the Korean border. The downed pilot parachuted to safety but is reportedly in Communist hands as investigators assess whether shots originated from Korea's neutral zone area.
Lake Oil and Gas Co of Midland announced a new oil venture one mile west of the Milnesand discovery well. The spudding occurred today in the northeast quarter of the southeast quarter section 148s 34e, marking the first test in this section while four producing wells lie in section 13 to the east.
The New Mexico Taxpayers Association announces its 42nd annual meeting in Santa Fe on April 2. President E. L. Moulino says a full day session will include a banquet and luncheon. Seventeen loggers and ten children stranded at Wolf Creek Canyon in Gila National Forest were rescued by New Mexico National Guard convoys led by Sheriff Mel Lopez. The group endured five to six feet of snow and severe exposure before being brought to safety and provided with food and shelter.
