Astronaut Russell L. Schweickart exited the lunar module for about 40 minutes for an extravehicular activity. He circled near the craft while fellow astronauts James A. McDivitt and David R. Scott remained connected in the command ship. Schweickart reported no suit or oxygen issues and described the Earth and surroundings as a very pretty scene.
In Santa Fe the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Santa Fe testifies against two NM House bills to widen medical abortion restrictions. Father Edward Rutowski states church doctrine holds abortion is a sin and unborn children have equal right to life.

The New Mexico Senate killed a bill creating an economic development authority with bonds backed by the state severance tax. Supporters said it could aid financing for a proposed multimillion pulp mill near Albuquerque and Santa Fe, tied to Parsons & Whittenmore. The chamber also rejected a proposal allowing counties a 25 percent tax assessment ratio for mill levies not for state use.
House Speaker David Norvell urged enacting tax bills to raise about 30 million dollars for the next fiscal year. He warned against hamstringing state government and urged action on taxation while Senate delays the school finance bill.
Albuquerque searchers still without clues in the disappearance of Roy Rinks 14. On day four, state police said searches of the Sandia Mountains west face were fruitless. Rinks reportedly planned to leave for California before joining Martin Ghee 14 on a bicycle hiking trip in the Sandias last Saturday.
The Santa Fe Senate heard SB1 and SB191 as the two measures fail to meet federal P. L. 874 requirements. A HEW telegram says current distributions cannot use 874 funds, forcing a possible special session if a new plan is not ready by March 22 and House action by March 12.
