In Manchester New Hampshire on February 28 1968 Richard Nixon pledged that a Republican administration would end the Vietnam War and seek peace in the Pacific. He said if Johnson does not finish the war by November a new administration will be elected to end the war and win the peace. Nixon criticized Johnson for slow military use and limited diplomatic pressure.
The Associated Press reports two more deaths in New Mexico traffic incidents. Felipe G. Lucero, 20, of Cerrillos was found inside a wrecked car in an arroyo off a state highway northwest of Cerrillos and is believed to have died during a late night drive home. Charlotte L. Conner, 58, of Albuquerque died when her car overturned on U S 60 six miles west of Datil.
Lovington voters faced light rain as they gathered for a municipal election to choose three commissioners and a municipal judge. At 2 pm, City Hall reported moderate turnout, with polls open until 7 pm. a separate Lovington city commission meeting was moved to 8 pm due to the election. Betty Jean Carlile, 28, of Hobbs New Mexico, died in Tyler after a one car crash last Friday that also injured her husband James Carlile, 29, who was reported in satisfactory condition.
Lea County commissioners faced a stalled property reappraisal program after the McMorries firm’s tax lien and unpaid receipts sparked a financial collapse. The Ame rillo based firm holds a 137 500 contract, with county managers noting 57 000 paid to date and 60 percent of the job done. Local officials explored routes with state authorities to resume or reassign the project while McMorries claims tax rules may exempt county contracts.

A Colombian Avianca DC4 with 30 aboard was hijacked shortly after 7:30 a.m. from Barranquilla to Riohacha and forced to Havana by unidentified hijackers. Pilot Capt. Viles said the situation was social on board. 26 passengers and 4 crew were aboard and the plane was due in Havana at 1:45 p.m. The incident followed another hijacking to Cuba two weeks earlier.
