A massive Lovington blaze destroyed Jackson Chevrolet Company at 601 South Main. Firefighters from 21 of 26 volunteers battled gusty winds of over 30 mph, keeping injuries from occurring as the building and contents, including three new Chevrolets, four used pickups, and three customer cars, suffered about 125000 dollars in loss. Traffic diverted off South Main as spectators watched. power and telecom services were out for hours. The building, over 20 years old, was leased and under sale, with insurance coverage varying by item and owner.
A Clovis meeting of Curry County Democrats endorsed Gene Lusk of Carlsbad for the gubernatorial nomination after Roy Walker failed to secure a ballot spot. Lusk argued for party unity and integrity while two candidates remain, including former Gov. John Burroughs.
A 38-year-old Lovington man, J.B. Westbrook, is in Lea County Jail on a $1000 bond charged with contributing to delinquency of a minor. He was arrested yesterday afternoon after a 13-year-old girl in the school system’s special education unit ran away and was found in a pickup on a ranch northwest of Lovington and returned to her mother.

Funeral services for Mrs Martha Carter of Clayton New Mexico mother of Mrs Faye Schutz and Mrs Martyn Woody of Lovington will be held at 2 30 p m Sunday at Boise City Oklahoma with burial there Mrs Carter died suddenly Thursday morning
Lovington Republican Anderson Carter filed for U S Senate against incumbent Clinton P Anderson of New Mexico and also sought election to Congress as a messenger for Robert Davidson of Albuquerque. Carter said he would name a statewide campaign manager within a week as Davidson faces U S Representative Johnny Walker for Position two in the House.
Rescue crews searched across four counties in central Mississippi as tornadoes left 58 dead and 450 injured in Mississippi and Alabama. Troopers, volunteers, and police swept rural areas after a 65 mile swath of destruction, with one twister hitting Candlestick Park in southwest Jackson and another wiping out a Leesburg home.
A 1954 Chevrolet four door sedan was damaged about $100 when it rolled across Main Street with no driver. Clarence R. Elgin, 26, of Lovington, had parked with the motor running and was cited for leaving a vehicle unattended.
