Agriculture commentator Bob Howard notes cotton prices fell from 80–85 cents to 45–50 cents, milo from about 5.25 to 3.20, and alfalfa from 80–90 to 50–60 per ton. Beef cattle also weakened with finished cattle at 35–40 cents per pound, stocker cattle at 30–35, and forecasts bleak. The piece stresses production costs rose with earlier price hikes and remain high.
In Moscow Nixon and Brezhnev prepare for talks as crowds line Lenin Prospect amid a festive display of American and Soviet flags. Jewish dissidents report arrests and harassment continuing ahead of the visit, with authorities rounding up activists and a dissident named Mikhail Agursky taken from his apartment.
Gov Bruce King named Mack Easley as judge for the Fifth Judicial District covering Lea Eddy and Chaves counties. Denver district court set July 12 for the trial of three officers of a land development firm charged with theft fraud conspiracy and selling unregistered securities. State witness Montoya II testified the Little King Ranch deal involved stock sales to undercover agents, with $20 000 in marked money.
State Attorney General will investigate cheating claims on the state registered nursing exam taken by about 700 people last month. Pamela Gerber of the New Mexico Board of Nursing says she has coded test answers as proof. The board will meet to decide if the exam should be invalidated after an anonymous letter with answers prompted alertness.
James Doolittle, who resigned as Republican State Finance Committee chair, says he asked GOP Chairman Murray Ryan for an audit of party funds. Doolittle notes Ryan initially supported an audit but later backed Bolack's leadership and said the party was in fine shape.
State Rep. George Pennington of San Juan County announces a bid for House speakership as part of a Conservative push to gain control from liberal Democrats. He cites a possible Conservative Democrat Republican coalition and recalls a near-miss in 1970.
A decoy policewoman posed as a Qantas stewardess to nab a $300,000 extortion scheme. Penny Miller handed over the money during a handoff in Drummoyne as detectives watched, leading to the arrest of 20-year-old Greek migrant Phillip Tassoulas on charges of demanding money with menace and intent to steal. He remains in custody until a July 5 hearing.
The House Agriculture Committee backed a $2 billion credit guarantee for livestock and poultry producers by 22 votes. The measure would guarantee up to 80 percent of loans to eligible producers at normal rates, with individual guarantees up to $550,000. The Senate version allows 90 percent guarantees and higher total cap, while loosening eligibility rules to include more nonfarmers.
A U S official aboard the Nixon plane in Moscow says the Soviet plan to cap strategic arms leaves the U S with an MIRV advantage and is not acceptable. He notes Kissinger and Nixon push for limits on new multiple warhead missiles and warns any lapse in talks could allow an uncontrolled arms race.
William Woodard age 66 died Tuesday in San Saba Texas after an apparent heart attack while vacationing. Burial set for 2:30 pm today at Ira Texas with Bell and Feale Funeral Home in charge. Services held at Ira Baptist Church. Survivors include his mother Mrs W L Woodard a sister Mrs Clifton Yancey and brother Raymond Woodard of Lovington
