The Mallamar activist Cubah Cox leads petitions with over 1,000 names calling for job acceptance before aid. She plans to press authorities in Roswell Hobbs and Ruidoso, arguing able people should work before welfare, food stamps, or unemployment checks.
President Nixon, embarking on his third summit with Soviet leaders in two years, stops in Brussels to meet NATO leaders and steer a path toward peace. He aims to strengthen bilateral ties with the USSR, expand cooperative areas, and curb nuclear arms. He appears rested after the Mideast trip and confident Americans back his peace efforts.
Washington reports a clash over the 1972 U S Soviet nuclear pact as Sen Henry M Jackson accuses a secret reinterpretation giving Russia more missiles. Kissinger defends the 950 ceiling and cites a 1972 agreement interpretation to limit deployments.
Lovington and north Lea County were under rain squalls Sunday night with Tatum reporting over one inch of rain while Lovington recorded only a tenth. An Amarillo man, Fred V. McMahan, 27, sustained critical injuries in a two-vehicle crash on the Plains Highway 12 miles east of Lovington around 8 43 a m Monday. Also injured were Hobbs residents Charles T. Phillips 70 G B Vance 47 and Randy Hall 20. Phillips and Vance had serious injuries while Hall was treated and released. Phillips drove a 1965 Dodge pickup eastbound and attempted a left turn as McMahan drove a 1973 Ford west on Hiway 82. both vehicles collided. McMahan remained in intensive care at Llano Estacado Medical Center Tuesday.
APD arrested fugitive Hal Young, wanted on forgery charges, Monday near a downtown hotel hosting the East Texas Police Officers Association meeting. Twelve officers stationed at the door recognized him from wanted posters and quickly took him into custody.
Bernalillo New Mexico district attorney Frederick B Howden says he will submit a citizens request for a Sandoval County grand jury to decide whether to investigate the county clerk s office. A petition with 965 signatures accuses Clerk Fleotsa Archibeque of irregular operations and disenfranchising voters.
Kirvin Tillis, 27, of Hobbs, remains in Lea County Jail on murder charges in the stabbing death of James Earl King, 33. Tillis faces $10,000 bond after arraignment before Magistrate Judge Don Hallam. The incident occurred outside the Knights of Pythias Club in Hobbs following an argument. a knife was recovered.

New Mexico senators Montoya and Domenici joined 64 colleagues in opposing a tax package. The plan would cut income taxes and end various business tax breaks including the depletion allowance. 33 lawmakers backed the measure. three were absent or did not vote.
Betty Hutton, once a Hollywood star dubbed the Blonde Bombshell, denied plans for a comeback at a Riverboat nightclub benefit for St. Anthony's parish in Portsmouth Alabama. The event, organized by Earl Wilson and Arthur Riback, drew photographers and celebrities and reportedly raised over $15,000 for the parish.
