Former KCIA chief Kim Hyung Wook testified before the House committee alleging a bribery operation to influence U.S. congressmen. He named Rep Cornelius Gallagher and Rep Richard Hanna as involved, said Park Tongsun directed payments, and claimed a list of 15 to 20 lawmakers was given for favors in exchange for military aid and other benefits.

Apodaca Stays Out as Ortiz-Davis Indictment Turmoil

Gov. Jerry Apodaca says he will not seek fresh bribery or conspiracy indictments against Rudy Ortiz and Charles Davis. Los Alamos Forest Fire Contained After 40 Mile Line

A week old forest fire near Los Alamos NM was contained after a 40 mile fire line held back flames that had destroyed over 15270 acres. Firefighting costs reached 993000 and officials estimate timber losses in the millions while ERDA and forest service crews assess final damage.

County 4-H Picnic Set for Saturday

The annual county 4-H picnic starts at 5 30 p.m. at the park amphitheater. All 4-H families are invited to bring food for a covered dish supper. McNutt-Worrell Agency Wins County Workmen's Bid

McNutt-Worrell Agency Inc of Lovington was the successful bidder on the county's year long workmen's compensation contract this week with a bid of 20,084 dollars. Their carrier is Home Insurance Company. Daniels Insurance of H bid 21,954 dollars and another bid of 26,252 was offered. Daniels currently holds the policy.

Illiteracy Said Spreading Strains Navy Recruiting

San Diego UPI Vice Adm James D Watkins says illiteracy among young Americans is widespread and hindering Navy recruiting. A study of 23,000 recruits found 37 percent cannot read at the 10th grade and 70 percent cannot finish boot camp. The Navy is teaching reading and rewriting manuals, costing up to 100 dollars per page, to raise literacy from third to sixth grade, while weapons become increasingly technical.
