In Albuquerque a Tuesday mayoral election includes a public referendum on pornography laws amid local battles over obscenity. The issue follows state and municipal efforts to regulate smut after Supreme Court changes, with Alamogordo’s ordinance struck as vague.
President Nixon arrived in Damascus after Saudi Arabia talks with King Faisal. Syrian escort fighters produced a brief scare as Nixon’s jet dodged and the motorcade moved through large crowds amid heightened security and gun salute ceremonies.
A car carrying ten people collided head on with a 40 foot trailer on a county road between Roswell and Carlsbad New Mexico. Eight occupants died and three survived including two Roswell teens in critical condition. All eight victims were from Caristad and Roswell. The truck driver from Roswell survived. The gasoline tank burst but a local fire unit quickly extinguished the follow up blaze.
District Judge Kermit Nash will retire from the Fifth Judicial District on July 1 after 11 years on the bench. Nash, a Hobbs resident appointed in 1963 to succeed John Brand, cites health reasons in his resignation letter to Gov. Bruce King.
The McDonald Community announces its annual Old Folks Day will be held at the community center on the fourth Sunday in June. This year marks the 49th assembly with worship in the morning and a basket lunch to follow. Everyone over 60 is invited as a special guest.
In Moscow over 150 million Soviet citizens vote to elect 1 517 candidates to the Supreme Soviet for four years. Brezhnev closes campaign with a rare Kremlin speech urging nuclear test restraints and noting hopes for improved US relations as turnout nears 99 percent.
Deputy Prime Minister Yigal Allon said on national TV he was not happy with the nuclear fuel deal linking the United States and Egypt. He warned it could invite other Arab states to seek atomic fuel from the Soviet Union while insisting inspections can prevent military use. He noted Egypt’s hydroelectric and oil resources call into question the need for atomic power and questioned the timing of the disclosure.

Harold Tafker of Bowie reported a rattlesnake in his tweeton flatbed cab after dinner at the Deluxe Cafe. Police directed him to Joe Waring who led a rescue squad that bored doors and floor, flushed with extinguishers, and cut the roof. No snake found, Tafker left with truck parts loaded.
Oil exporters met in Quito amid anti-American sentiment. Saudi Arabia favored lower prices and no tax change, Iran pushed higher prices and higher taxes, while several others proposed holding prices and raising taxes—about 58 percent—with potential increases in profits taxed above 50 cents per barrel. Venezuela urged a 9 percent price rise and 95 percent tax on profits over 30 cents.
The Environmental Improvement Board in Santa Fe approved new regulations governing emissions from natural gas processing plants and petroleum refineries including sulfur mercaptan carbon monoxide particulates and ammonia. Hydrogen sulfide limits apply to sulfur recovery plants with alarms required on new facilities. Public and semi public pools must register with the Water Quality Division. Action on the Albuquerque Transportation Control Strategy is postponed until September.
Don McDaniel, door host at Seattle Space Needle restaurant, reports a nude man dangled from a small airplane that circled the 607-foot symbol during a Friday night, flying within about 80 yards of the restaurant. Spectators reacted with mixed applause and concern as the stunt caused a commotion.
